Edward George Palmer was a coal dealer. He lived at 2001 Nelson Street from 1929 to 1931; at 2005 Comox Street from 1932 to 1937; and at 2040 Nelson Street from 1938 to 1944.
Family Background
Edward George Palmer was born in Plas Hall, Comptington, Shropshire, England on July 22, 1866. (He was sometimes called “Robin.”) His parents were Alfred Marsh Palmer (1836-1914) and Martha Maria Lockwood (1841-1926). Alfred and Martha were married on October 8, 1863.
By 1899, Alfred and Martha were living at Paparoa, New Zealand, when their daughter, Katherine, married William John Parrick Ridgway.
Alfred died at Paparoa on September 11, 1914.
Martha died at Huarau, New Zealand, on December 22, 1926.
Life in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa
Edward spent six years in New Zealand. At one time he was the manager of the Auckland Meat Company. He later lived in Australia for seven years.
Edward later went to South Africa, where he was employed as a cold storage expert for four years.
On April 30, 1903, in Durban, South Africa, he married Charlotte Ethel Marianne Rutherford, who was born in Durban on June 14, 1866. Her parents were George Rutherford (1818-1904) and Marianne Sloan Fraser (1825-1914).
To England and Canada
From 1903 to 1907, it appears that the Palmers lived in England, where both of their daughters were born.
They travelled to Canada in 1907, and they settled in Edmonton, Alberta.
In 1908, Edward became involved in Alberta’s chilled meat industry. (The meat was chilled, not frozen.)
By 1912, Edward was the secretary and managing director of the Edmonton Country Club Limited.
In November 1912 the Palmers went to New Zealand.
They returned to Canada in the spring of 1913.
In August 1913, the club’s governor praised Edward’s work for the club.
In September 1913, a fired destroyed the club.
The club quickly re-built the clubhouse.
On June 29, 1915, Edward signed his attestation papers to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. (He stated that his date of birth was 1870, rather than 1866.) He received a series of promotions until he became a major. He was discharged in 1919 as part of the general demobilization at the end of the war.
To Vancouver
Edward first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1921. He was living at 1605 Nelson Street and he was the manager of the Alberta Pacific Coal Company.
From 1921 to 1944, the Palmers lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.
1921 to 1928 | 1605 Nelson Street |
1929 to 1931 | 2001 Nelson Street |
1932 to 1937 | 2005 Comox Street |
1938 to 1944 | 2040 Nelson Street |
In 1923 the Alberta Pacific Coal Company changed its name to “Pacific Coal Company.”
In 1925, Edward went to Edmonton to meet with friends and to look at conditions in the city.
By the fall of 1925, Edward had renewed his involvement in proposals for the chilled meat industry.
In 1928, the Palmers moved to 2001 Nelson Street.
Edward carried on as the manager of the Pacific Coal Company until the late 1930s. In 1940, the company was for sale.
In 1940, the company made an assignment in bankruptcy.
By 1941, the Palmer Fuel Company had taken over the business. Edward’s daughter, Patricia, was the manager and secretary of the company.
Edward was retired by 1941. He died in Vancouver on April 17, 1944.
Ethel died in Vancouver on January 8, 1956.
Edward and Ethel had the following children
Katherine Frances Mattie Palmer
Katherine Frances Mattie Palmer was born in Birmingham, England on October 22, 1903. (She was sometimes called “Pat.”)
She travelled to Canada with her parents about 1907. In 1910, she was in Edmonton with her parents.
On October 12, 1957, she married James Stuart Homan, who was a surveyor and engineer. He was born in London, England on June 8, 1884. His parents were Charles Cooke Homan and Maud Seymour Cottingham.
James died in Vancouver on July 19, 1973.
Pat died in Vancouver on January 19, 1976.
Marianne Ethel Joyce Palmer
Marianne Ethel Joyce Palmer was born in Surrey, England in 1906.
She travelled to Canada with her parents about 1907.
On October 18, 1926, in Vancouver, she married John Alan McLellan Parker, who was a rancher. He was born in Durham County, England on July 12, 1900. His parents were John Edward Parker and Kate McLellan. (This marriage ended in divorce. John married Gwendolyn Mary Cornwall on October 13, 1931. John died in Ashcroft, British Columbia on September 8, 1972. Gwendolyn died in West Vancouver, British Columbia on February 10, 1988.)
On June 3, 1939, in Vancouver, Marianne married Reg Whittaker, who was an R.C.M.P. constable. He was born in Romiley, Cheshire, England on November 29, 1905. His parents were Stephen Robert Thompson Whittaker and Bertha Grimshaw.
Reg died in Victoria, British Columbia on February 1, 1996. It appears that Marianne lived in Victoria for some time after that.

G. Palmer, a cold storage expert, was asked to address the annual meeting of the Alberta Cattle Breeders’ Association on the subject of chilled meat. Palmer extolled the superiority of chilled beef to its frozen counterpart. He also pointed out that Chicago had sent fifty million pound of chilled meat to Britain in the first three months of the year. Loud applause greeted his rousing statement that Canada should ‘take the place in the business now occupied by the States.’ Yet, after discussing cost and profitability factors, Palmer concluded that government involvement was neceswary to expedite a national chilled beef trade.”
