William De Silva was a master mariner. He lived at 1859 Beach Avenue from 1904 to 1906 and at 1830 Pendrell Street from 1907 to 1909.

William De Silva was born in England on March 3, 1841 (some sources say 1844 or 1847). His father was William De Silva. His mother was Margaret Shaw.

William married Ellen McClintock. She was born on May 30, 1851 (or 1852) in St. John, New Brunswick. Her mother was Ellen McAfee.

In 1884, the De Silvas were living in Prescot, east of Liverpool, England. By the late 1880s, they were in California.

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1897.

In 1909 and 1910, William was the manager of the English Bay Natatorium, which was a swimming facility at 1869 Beach Avenue.

William died in Vancouver on February 14, 1916. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Ellen died in Vancouver on March 12, 1935.

William and Ellen had the following children.

 

Bertha Martha De Silva

Bertha Martha De Silva was born on June 15, 1884, in Prescot, near Liverpool, Lancashire. In 1901 and 1911 she was living with her parents in Vancouver.

On September 2, 1914, in Vancouver, Bertha married Alexander Henderson, who was a shipper. He was born on August 12, 1885, in Culdaff, Ireland. His father was Alexander Henderson. His mother was Jean Cook.

Alexander died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on April 30, 1960. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Bertha died in New Westminster on December 12, 1964. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

 

Mabel Keazer De Silva

Mabel Keazer De Silva was born in San Diego, California, on October 21, 1887 (or 1886). In 1901 and 1911 she was living with her parents in Vancouver.

On January 28, 1914, in Vancouver, Mabel married Robert Francis Dougherty, who was a stationary engineer. He was born on November 5, 1876, in St. Martins, New Brunswick. His father was Henry Craswell (sometimes spelled Carswell) Dougherty (1853-1911). His mother was Emma Armstrong Compton (1844-1922).

Robert died in Vancouver on March 2, 1940.

Mabel died in Vancouver on June 23, 1974.

 

William Ewart Gladstone De Silva

William Ewart Gladstone De Silva was born in San Diego, California, on January 16, 1890. In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents in Vancouver.

He worked as an automobile mechanic.

In 1918, he was drafted to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He was discharge from the military forces in 1919.

On October 22, 1928, in Vancouver, he married Evelyn Florence Miller. She was born in Fairlight, in eastern Saskatchewan, on July 13, 1904. Her father was Henry Walter Miller (1878-1948). Her mother was Florence Evelyn Bennett (1881-1948).

William later worked as a building inspector for Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation (known as Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation after 1979).

William died in Vancouver on September 8, 1968.

Evelyn died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on October 5, 1981.

 

Charles Spurgeon De Silva

Charles Spurgeon De Silva was born in California (possibly in San Diego) on October 18, 1891.

In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents in Vancouver.

In 1914, he was working as a fireman for the City of Vancouver.

On Mary 28, 1914, in Vancouver, he married Marion Francis. She was born in Wales on February 18, 1889. (One source says that she was born in Montana.) Her father was David Francis (1864-1938). Her mother was Margretta Morris.

Charles later worked as a laborer.

Charles died in Coquitlam, British Columbia, on August 8, 1964.

Marion died in Burnaby, British Columbia, on March 3, 1977.

Deane Bros., was the novel defence raised this morning in a suit brought by de Silva for $525 wages. Mr. de Silva claimed that he worked as engineer and purser on the S.S.
