“A lovely autumn wedding will be solemnized Saturday afternoon, October 24, at 4 o’clock, in Christ Episcopal Church, Coronado, uniting Miss Eva Frances Shrapnel, daughter of Mrs. Anita Shrapnel and the late J. H. Shrapnel of Vancouver, British Columbia, and George B. Rogers, son of Mr. and Mrs. George T. Rogers of Coronado. The Reverend Charles Barnes, who officiated at the wedding of the bridegroom’s parents, will perform the ceremony. Rev. H. O. Nash of Coronado will assist at the nuptial services.

The bride, who will be given in marriage by her mother, will approach the altar on the arm of J. Leslie Cutler. Mr. Claude K. Webster will play the wedding marches and other selections preceding the ceremony.

Attending the bride will be Mrs. E. W. Anthony, as matron of honor, and Miss Kate Rogers, sister of the bridegroom as bridesmaid. Serving as best man will be E. W. Anthony, and Hans Heink, Richard Edson and Lt. Francis Foley as ushers.

The bride has chosen for her wedding gown a French lace of raised tulip pattern, made over white satin in pencil silhouette design, folds of the skirt softly billowing to the floor. The jacquette worn over the classical gown, and also made of the French lace, has long tight fitting sleeves ending over the hands in a long point and fastened with minute loops and satin buttons. The short peplin cascades in a sharp line at the back, small white velvet violets marking the waistline. She will wear a small white stitched hat of silk net. Her bouquet will be pink rose buds and bouvardia. The matron of honor, Mrs. Anthony, will wear a gown of old rose taffeta with dark accessories. Miss Kate Rogers, the bridesmaid, will wear blue moire taffeta with accessories and hat of royal blue.

The bride’s mother, Mrs. Shrapnel, has chosen a dress of silver grey chiffon with chantilly lace. Her small velvet hat and other accessories will be in black. The bride-groom’s mother, Mrs. Rogers has chosen rose tan lace with which she will wear dark brown accessories.

The Church and altar will be beautifully decorated with chrysanthemums of white and autumn colors, potted palms and fern, and tall white tapers.

A reception will follow at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Nash, after which the young couple will leave on a wedding trip. When they return they will reside at 2700 Barnson Place, San Diego.

Miss Shrapnel’s going away dress is of French, gray sheer, made with tunic, and trimmed with Sharapelli blue. Her accessories and close fitting hat will be of harmonizing blue.

The bride-elect is the great granddaughter of General Henry Shrapnel, of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, inventor of the famous shrapnel shell used in the world war. She was educated in British Columbia.

Mr. Rogers, a native Californian, graduated from the Coronado schools and is associated with the Bank of America in Coronado. Out-of-town wedding guests will inelude two cousins of the bride-to-be, the Misses Helen and Dorothy Maguire, who will arrive Friday by plane from Vancouver, and a few friends from Los Angeles.”

Helen Kathleen Wilson (née Maquire), death notice; Parksville Qualicum Beach News; December 21, 2003; http://www.pqbnews.com/obituaries/william-moir-gartshore-wilson/:

“WILSON, Helen Kathleen Wilson (nee Maguire) passed away in her sleep on December 20, 2003, at the age of 92. Her husband, WILSON, William Moir Gartshore, passed away on December 21, 2003 at the age of 94.

This is truly a love story – they were happily married for 63 years, and neither would have wanted to continue on without the other. We believe they are in a better place. Helen Maguire was born and raised in Vancouver. She was beautiful, athletic and intelligent, graduating from UBC at the age of 19. She was the first person hired by United Airlines in Vancouver. Helen devoted her married life to creating a home where everyone in the large extended family was welcome.

Bill Wilson was born in London, ON, but grew up in Vancouver. He obtained a medical degree from University of Toronto in 1935, and subsequently returned to British Columbia, where he joined a medical practice in Kamloops. Helen and Bill had met many years earlier as teenagers on the beach at Qualicum, and proximity allowed the acquaintance to be renewed and blossom. They were wed in 1940. Bill served overseas in W.W.II with the Canadian Army 13th Field Ambulance, and was promoted to the rank of Major and awarded the O.B.E. On his return, Bill specialized as an eye surgeon and practiced ophthalmology in Vancouver. He had a distinguished career, serving a term as president of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society. In 1979, Helen and Bill moved to semi-retirement in Qualicum Beach.

They are sadly missed by Bill’s sister, Margaret Rowan-Legg; sisters-in-law Ruth Brazier and Barbara Maguire; and by their sons, Jack and David, their daughter-in-law, Elsemarie; their grandchildren, Kimberley and Robert; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A joint memorial service to celebrate their lives together will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, January 3, 2004 at St. Stephen’s United Church, 150 Village Way in Qualicum Beach.

Donations in their memory may be made to the Brown Property Preservation Society, 2-707 Primrose Street, Qualicum Beach, V9K 2K1.”
