William Lawrence Smith was an optician who lived at 1996 Pendrell Street in 1920 and 1921. In the 1920 Vancouver city directory street listing he was Wm. L. Smith.

Henderson’s Vancouver Directory, 1920, page 262 (Pendrell Street).

Henderson’s Vancouver Directory, 1920, page 262 (Pendrell Street).

William Lawrence Smith was born in Florence, Ontario on January 3, 1873. (He was often known as “Lawrence.”) His parents were William Egerton Smith (1846-1915) and Annie Lawrence (1946-1914).

In 1881 and 1891 Lawrence was living in Ontario with his parents.

Move to Vancouver: Watchmaker, Jeweler and Optician

Lawrence first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1908. He was a watchmaker, living at 49 West Hastings Street.

Henderson’s City of Vancouver Directory, 1908, page 943.

Henderson’s City of Vancouver Directory, 1908, page 943.

From 1908 to 1947 he lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1908 and 1909 49 West Hastings
1910 and 1911 833 East Pender Street
1912 to 1918 928 West Eighth Avenue
1919 Not listed in Vancouver names
1920 to 1921 1996 Pendrell Street
1922 to 1924 928 West Eighth Avenue
1925 to 1947 4575 West Ninth Avenue

By 1909 he was also advertising his services as an optician.

Vancouver Daily World, June 26, 1909, page 47, column 5.

Vancouver Daily World, June 26, 1909, page 47, column 5.

According to the advertisement below, in January 1911 The Emporium was getting ready to move from 894 Granville Street, and Lawrence Smith was planning to move into the former Emporium location.

Vancouver Daily World, December 2, 1910, page 12.

Vancouver Daily World, December 2, 1910, page 12.

Despite the advertising, it appears that Lawrence stayed at his former location (49 West Hastings Street). In October 1911, Thomas Howard Harvey Ramage, who was a jeweler and optician, was at 894 Granville Street when thieves broke into his store and took several diamond rings. (The Vancouver World article gives the address as “849 Granville,” but the store was actually at number 894.)

In the 1921 Canada census, Lawrence was listed as “Edwin Lawrence Smith.”

By 1925, he was no longer advertising himself as “W. Lawrence Smith.” Instead, he became “Lawrence William Smith” or “Lawrence W. Smith.”

M.D., C.M., F.R.C.S.(C) Ophthalmic Surgeon (1919-2006) Peacefully and unexpectedly on December 4th, 2006, Eric died in the presence of his family at Vancouver General Hospital, where he had served as Ophthalmic surgeon for more than 40 years. He will be remembered and missed as a man of action, integrity, and humour – and as a loving husband to Shelagh; devoted father to Eric (Trish), Stuart (Kim), Kathleen, (Brian Outerbridge) and Brock (Claudia); beloved Poppa to James, Kevin, Stephen, Erin, Alison, Nathan, Karen, Laura, Ford, and Reed; big brother to Lorna; brother-in-law to John (Joyce) Wheeler, Elida (Brian) Harris, and William (Eileen) Wheeler; and as Uncle Eric to their children, and to the children of close family friends. Born in Vancouver to parents Lawrence and Louisa, Eric graduated from Lord Byng high school and earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from UBC. As a Captain in the Canadian Armed Forces, Eric used his engineering skills in WWII. Following the war Eric studied medicine at McGill University, completing a specialization in Ophthalmology with residency work at the Montreal General where he met and married Shelagh Wheeler. After completing a senior residency in Manhattan, Eric returned to Vancouver in 1953 to pioneer the use of operating microscopes and new techniques in corneal transplant surgery. As a Professor at UBC, Eric was teacher and mentor to many medical students and Ophthalmology residents at VGH, who learned from him not only skills and techniques, but also the importance of truly caring about, and for, patients. It was the long term relationships with his patients that gave Eric his greatest professional joy. An avid outdoors man, scouter, fly-fisher, skier, boater, and woodworker, Eric sought and created adventures for his family and friends which will long be remembered. His family is comforted by the thought that he is now on the greatest of adventures. Eric, Dad, Poppa, Uncle Eric, Dr. Smith: you will be missed.
