James Gibson was a salesman for the Hudson’s Bay Company. He lived at 1898 Alberni Street in 1916.

James Gibson was born in Georgetown, British Guiana, on March 2, 1882. His father was David Gibson. His mother was Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) Esplin.

It appears that James was living in Sutton at Hone, Kent, England, in 1901, and that he was a horticulture student.

He travelled to Canada about 1908. He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1909. He was a clerk for the Hudson’s Bay Company, and he was living at 639 East Seventh Avenue. He appeared at the following addresses in Vancouver.

On April 24, 1915, in Vancouver, James married Margaret Ann Gordon, who was a dress-maker. She was born in New Deer, Aberdeen, Scotland, on August 29, 1888. Her father was George Gordon. Her mother was Mary Innes.

James worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company until about 1922.

By 1923, he and Charles Burnet had started the Press Engraving Company.

James and Margaret lived in Vancouver through the 1920s to the 1960s.

James remained with Press Engraving until about 1947. From 1948 to 1951, he was office manager and clerk for the Vancouver Province newspaper. He retired about 1953.

Margaret died in Vancouver on January 5, 1964.

James died in Vancouver on August 19, 1972.

James and Margaret had the following children.

 

John Gordon (“Jock”) Gibson

John Gordon (“Jock”) Gibson was born in Vancouver on July 28, 1916.

Jock was married to Ivy Jean.

Jock died in Pender Harbour, British Columbia, on March 15, 2005.

 

Mary Elizabeth (“Betty”) Gibson

Mary Elizabeth (“Betty”) Gibson was born in British Columbia, probably in Vancouver, about 1919.

She died before 2006.

 

Unnamed Girl Gibson

James and Margaret had a still-born baby girl, born on January 19, 1924. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

David Lachlan Gibson

David Lachlan Gibson was born in Vancouver on March 15, 1926.

He went to school at Queen Mary Elementary School and Lord Byng High School. In 1948 he graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in Agriculture Sciences.

In 1951, along with Earl MacKay and other partners, he started the Fresh-Pak Limited vegetable-processing company in Burnaby, British Columbia. The company later became part of McCain’s. David retired as general manager in 1978.

He was active in the Freemasons in Vancouver, and was grandmaster in 1988-1989.
