William Watts was a boat builder. His business later became the Vancouver Ship Yard Limited, and William was the manager of the company. (Further details appear on the page for Vancouver Ship Yard Limited: https://westendvancouver.wordpress.com/business-names/vancouver-ship-yard-limited/.)

William Watts was born on December 31, 1862 (or 1863) in Collingwood, Ontario. His parents were William Watts and Susan Newton. William Watts, Senior was a well-known boat builder in Ontario.

William Watts, Junior moved to British Columbia about 1887.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1889. He was a deckhand on the steamer “Mamie.”

In 1889, he and Edward Trott started a boat-building business in Vancouver.

In 1892, William travelled to Ontario to get married.

On September 12, 1892, in Toronto, Ontario he married Louisa Emily Leckie. She was born in Toronto on January 15, 1867. Her parents were John Leckie and Jane Perring.

In addition to his boat-building business, William was also a well-known rower.

William and Louisa lived in Vancouver for most of their married life, although they travelled throughout Canada and the United States from time to time.

William built boats under his own name until the turn of the century.

In 1902, the Vancouver Ship Yard Limited took over the boat-building business and William became the manager of Vancouver Ship Yard.

He was also the deputy harbor master in Vancouver. In 1913 he investigated reports of oil leaking into Burrard Inlet from the Imperial Oil Company’s facility at Barnet. (At that time, Imperial Oil’s facility was “Impoco”; the company’s later operations were at “Ioco.”)

In 1916, he injured himself in a fall at work, causing him to take time off to recuperate.

In 1918, William and Louisa took their son, Clarence, with them on an automobile trip to the United States.

In 1922, they went on a road trip to Boston, Massachusetts.

Louisa died in Vancouver on May 29, 1931.

William died in Vancouver on May 8, 1954.

William and Emily had the following children.

 

Harold Newton Watts

Harold Newton Watts was born in Vancouver on April 23, 1894.

He worked as a surveyor.

He served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He signed his attestation paper on October 25, 1916. He served in France, and he was discharged from the military forces on August 31, 1919.

In 1921, he was living with his parents in Vancouver.

He later became a chemical engineer in Trail, British Columbia.

On September 10, 1927, in Trail, he married Alice Maude York, who was a school teacher. She was born on April 2, 1899 in North Brookfield, Nova Scotia. Her parents were George Alfred York and Margaret Ann Meagher.

Harold died in Trail on June 26, 1958.

Alice died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on August 23, 1994.

 

Clarence Leckie Watts

Clarence Leckie Watts was born on July 29, 1895 in Oakland, California.

He worked as a mechanic.

On April 7, 1920, in Vancouver, he married Phoebe Willcox. She was born on July 31, 1893 in Newport, Wales. Her parents were Harry Willcox and Elizabeth Binning.

Phoebe died in West Vancouver, British Columbia on May 1, 1984.

Clarence died in West Vancouver on January 9, 1991.
