McNaughton, Peter Fisher (1859-1937)

1967 Barclay Street: 1904 to 1908.

1934 Barclay Street: 1909 to 1916.

Peter Fisher McNaughton was an accountant and office manager in a series of businesses, including P. Burns and Co. Ltd. both in Vancouver and in Calgary, and the Vancouver Club. He was a member of the Masonic Order, and was the oldest past master of Mount Hermon Lodge No. 7, A.F. & A.M. (Ancient Free & Accepted Masonry).

Peter was born in Glengarry County (probably in Maxville), Ontario, on December 4, 1859. He was the son of Peter McNaughton and Jane Kennedy. Peter arrived on the west coast of British Columbia, apparently on the first trans-Canada train to arrive in Port Moody on July 4, 1886.

On January 15, 1891, in Vancouver, Peter married Mary Henrietta McIntosh. Mary was born on April 7, 1859, in Roxborough Township, Glengarry County, Ontario. She was the daughter of Alexander McIntosh (born July 12, 1830; died October 31, 1889, in Reno, Nevada) and Charlotte Scott (born June 11, 1929; died November 6, 1902, Vancouver). Mary’s family had lived in Indiana, Ohio, California and Nevada, before arriving in Vancouver about 1888.

Until 1899, Peter worked as a bookkeeper for George Hayes and William Arthur McIntosh, who was probably Peter’s brother-in-law (1860-1951). Hayes and McIntosh were butchers at 55 Cordova Street. From 1900 to 1908, Peter was a bookkeeper for P. Burns and Co. Ltd. In 1909, he worked for Appleton Investment Co. From 1910 to 1913 he was secretary of the Vancouver Club. In 1914, he became the treasurer of Western Residential Schools Ltd., where he stayed until about 1916.

From about 1892 to about 1903, Peter and Mary lived at 1132 Pender Street in Vancouver. In 1904, they moved to 1967 Barclay Street. In 1905, they took a much-belated wedding trip, which included a visit to the United States and a stop in St. John, New Brunswick. In 1909, they moved to 1934 Barclay Street. They stayed at 1934 Barclay Street until about 1916, when they moved to Gordon Head, which is part of the greater Victoria area on Vancouver Island. Their home in Gordon Head, called “Ronhilda,” was on Tyndall Road. Peter was involved in fruit farming until he died in Gordon Head on April 14, 1937. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Mary was vice-president of the Vancouver Local Council of Women from 1904-1910, and was president of the council from 1910 to 1913. She was elected to the Vancouver School Board in 1912-1914. She was a founding director of the Vancouver Women’s Building Limited in 1911. She was also a charter member of the Vancouver Women’s Canadian Club, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Vancouver General Hospital Board of Governors and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. She organized the Women’s Auxiliary to Westminster Hall (later called Union College). After the family moved to the Victoria area, she was a member of the Victoria Local Council of Women. She was president of the Victoria Women’s Canadian club in 1928.

Mary died in Victoria, on Jan 8, 1946 in Victoria, British Columbia. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
