Mace, William Arthur (1879-1975)

William Arthur Mace was a carpenter who lived at 1822 Alberni Street from 1909 to 1913.

 

William Arthur Mace’s Parents

William Arthur Mace was born on November 27, 1879, in Smiths Creek, New Brunswick. His father was William Allen Mace (1846-1919), who was a farmer and carpenter. On November 8, 1871, in Studholm, New Brunswick, William Allen Mace had married Frances Alice Harrison. She was born on December 19, 1849.

The Mace family arrived in Vancouver in the late 1880s. William Allen Mace appeared in the Vancouver directory in 1889.

About 1888, Willliam Allen Mace built a house on Comox Street (The original house number was apparently 1140 Comox. It was later known as 1160 Comox). It was probably the first house in what later became known as the Mole Hill community.

Willian Allen Mace’s wife, Frances, died in Vancouver on September 1, 1895. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

William Allen Mace died in Sussex, King’s County, New Brunswick on August 31, 1919.

 

William Arthur Mace’s Career and Family

William Arthur Mace came to Vancouver in the 1880s with his parents.

By 1907 he was working as a millwright.

On May 8, 1907, in Vancouver, he married Laura Josephine Ibbotsen, who was born in or near Langley, British Columbia, on February 22, 1886. Laura’s father was James Ibbotsen (1851-1928), who was a merchant. Laura’s mother was Rosalie Falardeau (1861-1944).

In 1909, William and Laura moved to 1822 Alberni Street.

At the time of the 1911 Canada census, William was working as a bookkeeper. The 1911 Vancouver directory listed him as the secretary of Bettschen and Higgins, who had an office fitting company at 1261 Powell Street.

The Mace family stayed at 1822 Alberni Street until 1913. They did not appear in the Vancouver directories after that.

They moved to Savary Island, British Columbia, where William operated a carpentry and housebuilding business. The family stayed on Savary Island at least until the late 1940s.

Laura died in Powell River, British Columbia, on April 27, 1969.

William died in Powell River on April 12, 1975.

 

William and Laura had the following children.

 

Allen William Mace

Allen William Mace was born in Vancouver on April 16, 1908. He became a self-employed carpenter.

He married May Leone Russell, who was born in New Westminster, British Columbia.

Allen died in New Westminster on November 24, 1960.

 

Irene Adelaide Mace

Irene Adelaide Mace was born in Vancouver on June 9, 1909.

On March 4, 1933, on Savary Island, she married William Hanry Farnden, who was a pulp mill chemist. He was born in Vancouver on April 2, 1912. His father was Alfred Stephen Farnden. His mother was Louise [Louisa] White Edwards.

William Farnden later worked as a pulp mill shift supervisor in Powell River. He died in Powell River on March 16, 1969.

Irene died in Powell River on December 10, 2008.

 

Evelyn Laura Mace

Evelyn Laura Mace was born in British Columbia (probably in Vancouver) about 1912 (possibly on March 31, 1912).

Evelyn married Barnard Fisker Jensen, who was an electrician. He was born in Orum, Denmark, on February 1, 1900. His father was Soren Jensen. His mother was Else Andersen.

Bernard died in Vancouver on November 16, 1973.

Evelyn died between 1973 and 2009.

 

Alice Rosalie Mace

Alice Rosalie Mace was born on December 12, 1915, possibly on Savary Island.

Alice married James G. Mowbray.

She died on March 7, 2014.

 

Gertrude Doris Mace

Gertrude Doris Atkinson (often called “Doris”) was born about 1917 in British Columbia (possibly on Savary Island).

She married Mr. L. Atkinson.

She died between 1975 and 2009.

 

Unnamed Baby Mace

On June 17, 1919, on Savary Island, William and Laura had a stillborn boy. He was buried in Savary Island.

After Bill passed away in 1969, Irene continued to entertain her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with various beach activities, games and crafts.

Irene was a faithful member of the Anglican Church and also spent many hours volunteering with the Powell River Music Festival and the Powell River Historical Museum and Archives. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 2 pm at St. David and St. Paul Anglican Church, 6310 Sycamore Avenue. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Powell River General Hospital CAT Scan Fund or charity of your choice.”
