Harry Hayward Symes was a police constable. He lived at 1180 Denman Street in 1917 and 1918.

Harry Hayward Symes was born at Isle Abbotts, Somerset, England, on May 11, 1880. His parents were Samuel Symes (1847-1921) and Mary Hayward (1850-1903). Samuel Symes was a butcher and dairyman.

In 1899, Harry enlisted to serve with the British forces in South Africa during the Second Boer War.

By the time of the 1901 England and Wales census, Harry was a police constable in Wimborne Minster, Dorsetshire, about 10 kilometres northwest of Bournemouth.

 

Life in Canada

It appears that Harry arrived in Canada in 1907.

He had recently travelled from South Africa to Southampton, England in January 1907.

Service in First World War

In 1914, Harry signed his attestation papers to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. The Vancouver police department encouraged its detectives and constables to enlist, and gave them six months’ leave of absence.

Harry went to Europe with the first group of Vancouver police officers who had enlisted.

Harry served in France. In August 1916, he was reported as “missing.”

Another report stated that he was wounded.

He eventually returned to Canada and he was discharged from the military on March 28, 1918.

It appears that Harry made arrangements with the Soldier Settlement Board to acquire land that was suitable for farming.

Harry and Annie went to live at Port Washington on Pender Island, British Columbia. In 1920, they appeared on the list of eligible voters.

Harry’s health deteriorated, and he went to the Esquimalt Military Hospital near Victoria, British Columbia. He died in the hospital on July 25, 1920.

Annie continued to live at Port Washington until the early 1960s. In 1937, Annie and her daughter, Kathleen, appeared on the list of eligible voters.

Annie died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on December 30, 1962.

Harry and Annie had a daughter.

 

Kathleen Mary Symes

Kathleen Mary Symes was born in Vancouver on April 25, 1913.

She married Horace Eldred Preston, who was a draftsman. He was born in Vancouver on August 26, 1915. His parents were Robert William Eugene Preston and Mary Elizabeth Blackburne.

Horace died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on July 29, 1996.

Kathleen died in 2000.

Selected archival notes pertaining to the Pender Islands: “Ten did not return” by Alan Livingstone MacLeod, author of “Remembered in Bronze and Stone, Canada’s Great War Memorial Statuary”: http://www.penderislandmuseum.org/content/looking-back: “Born at Isle Abbott, Somerset, Harry Hayward Symes was a 34-year-old Vancouver police constable when war erupted in 1914. Like so many other Pender Islanders, Symes enlisted early, 23 September 1914 at Valcartier. Lance-Corporal Symes lies in a war grave, albeit one far removed from the Western Front: at Victoria’s Ross Bay Cemetery. Symes died 25 July 1920, presumably a victim of war wounds or disease.”
