Buchanan, Rupert Charles (1867-1962)

Rupert Charles Buchanan (often called “Charles”) was the manager of Royal Securities Corporation. He lived at 1847 Barclay Street in 1918 and possibly in 1919.

He was born on June 7, 1867, in St. Catherines, Ontario. His father was Alexander Brock Buchanan; his mother was Elizabeth Ann Best.

In 1871, 1881, and 1891, Charles was living with his parents in Montreal, Quebec.

On April 22, 1896, in Quebec City, Quebec, he married Mary Jane McLimont. She was born in Quebec on April 22, 1866; her father was William McLimont; her mother was Sarah Clapham.

By 1901, Charles and Mary were living in their own house in Montreal. In 1911, he and Mary were in Coldstream Municipality, near Vernon, British Columbia. They continued to live in the area of Vernon, British Columbia, in the mid-1910s.

In September 1916, Charles enlisted to serve as a lieutenant in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He described himself as a rancher, living in Vernon.

After the war, he lived in Vancouver, where he became the manager of Royal Securities Corporation.

Mary died in Vancouver on January 14, 1945.

Charles died in Vancouver on December 12, 1962.

 

Charles and Mary had the following children.

 

Alexander Ronald Buchanan

Alexander Ronald Buchanan was born in the province of Quebec on July 16, 1901. He became a stock broker. He married Margaret Griffith. She was born in New Zealand on December 31, 1914. Her father was Milford Morris Griffith; her mother was Agnes Alberta Reid-Jones.

Margaret died in Vancouver on January 15, 1949.

Ronald later married Stella Siban.

Ronald died in Richmond, British Columbia, on October 14, 1958.

 

 

William Henry Keith Buchanan

William Henry Keith Buchanan was born in Montreal, Quebec, on June 4, 1903.

On August 2, 1929, in Vancouver, he married Elizabeth Agnes Kirk. She was born about 1905, in Victoria, British Columbia. Her father was George Alan Kirk; her mother was Elizabeth Georgina Harvey.

William died in Vancouver on October 1, 1931.

 

Nancy Greaves Buchanan

Nancy Greaves Buchanan was born about 1907 in Montreal, Quebec.

On January 11, 1928, in North Vancouver, British Columbia, she married Charles Edward Woodcock Stringer. He was born on March 17, 1884, in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England. His father was Charles Woodcock Stringer; his mother was Elizabeth Elworthy.

Charles died in Sidney, British Columbia, on September 26, 1947.

By 1950, Nancy was married to John Lytton Mara (called “Lytton”), and living in Victoria, British Columbia. He was a director of Boorman Investments. He was born in Lytton, British Columbia, on August 14, 1887. His father was John Andrew Mara, a pioneer in British Columbia; his mother was Alice Barnard.

Lytton died in Victoria, British Columbia, on June 11, 1970.

Nancy died in Victoria in mid-June 2001.
