Hogg, William Hall (1862-1939)

William Hogg was at 1034 Gilford Street in the 1914 Vancouver directory’s street list.

It appears that this was William Hall Hogg, who was the manager of the Bank of Montreal at 586 Granville Street.

William Hall Hogg - Northern Who’s Who, Vol 1 - 1916 - page 352

William Hall Hogg – Northern Who’s Who, Vol 1 – 1916 – page 352

[A less-likely conclusion is that it was another William Hogg, who was the inspector for the Pacific Coast District of the Canadian Bank of Commerce. Further details appear below, under “Sources.”]

William Hall Hogg was born in Peterborough, Ontario, on August 12, 1862. His father was James Hogg; his mother was Barbara Lawrice (although this may be a misspelling for another name, such as “Lawrence.”)

He became a bank clerk in Stratford, Ontario in 1877. By 1886, he had moved to Calgary, Alberta, where he was with the Bank of Montreal. For some time he was also with the Bank of Montreal’s branch in Regina.

On November 11, 1890, William Hall Hogg married Geraldine Hodder Stewart in Ottawa, Ontario. She was born in Ottawa on March 20, 1867. Her father was John Cunningham Stewart (1839-1888); her mother was Geraldine Mary Hodder (1841-1928).

In July 1913, William Hall Hogg left Calgary to became the manager of the Bank of Montreal’s branch in Vancouver. In 1919, he became the superintendent of the British Columbia branches of the bank. He retired in 1930. He died in Vancouver on July 16, 1939.

Some family sources indicate that Geraldine separated from William, and that she had theatrical aspirations for her younger daughter, Gerry (1901-1992). Another variation of the story is that Gerry was the result of an affair between Geraldine and Frederick Haultain, who was a politician and later a judge in Saskatchewan.

In any case, Geraldine and Gerry do not appear with the rest of the family in the 1911 Canada census. As well, Geraldine and Gerry appear in California in the 1920 United States federal census. Later, Geraldine and Gerry went to England.

Geraldine Hogg died on March 25, 1942 in England. She was buried in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria, England.

William Hall Hogg and Geraldine Hodder Stewart had the following children:

James Cunningham Hogg  (1891-1968)

James Cunningham Hogg was born in Calgary, Alberta on September 13, 1891. He was a bank clerk and stock broker. On August 9, 1921, in Vancouver, he married Frances Jean Congdon. She was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 27, 1899. Frances’s father was Frederick Tennyson Congdon (1858-1932), who was a lawyer, then acted as Commissioner of the Yukon Territory, and later became an member of the federal parliament. Frances’s mother was Louisa Gladwin (1860-1930).

James died in Vancouver on August 13, 1968. Frances died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on November 28, 1976.

Barbara Lawrie [or “Laurie”] Hogg (1892-1972)

Barbara Lawrie Hogg was born in Regina, Northwest Territories (now Saskatchewan) on May 12, 1893. She did not marry. She died in Vancouver on June 28, 1972.

William Stewart Hogg (1895-1975)

William Stewart Hogg was born in Calgary, Alberta on April 28, 1895. He served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the First World War. He was married to Enid. He died in Uxbridge, Durham, Ontario, on December 26, 1975.

Helen Geraldine Hogg (Gerry) (1901-1992)

Helen Geraldine Hogg was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 27, 1901. According to one source, Gerry’s father may have been Sir Frederick W.G. Haultain (1857-1942), who was premier of the North West Territories, Canada 1906. Gerry died on January 23, 1992 in London, England.

Which William Hogg?

Under Henderson’s Greater Vancouver City Directory, 1914, Part 1, page 409, the listing for 1034 Gilford is “Hogg, Wm.”

The 1914 Vancouver Social Register and Club Directory, page 32 shows “Hogg, Mr. and Mrs. Wm., 1034 Gilford, Sey. 936.”

Neither the directory street list nor the social register provides an occupation for William Hogg.

The name list for 1914 (which often provides occupations) doesn’t show a William Hogg at 1034 Gilford.

Henderson’s Greater Vancouver City Directory, 1914, Part 1, page 915 has the following list of William Hoggs:

  • Hogg, William, Inspector Pacific Coast District, Canadian Bank of Commerce, 698 Hastings W., Phone Seymour 4340 (Exchange) Res. Balfour and Cartier Aves. (Shaughnessy Heights.)

  • Hogg, W. H., Manager Vancouver Branch, Bank of Montreal, 586 Granville St., Phone Seymour 9180, res. 1461 Harwood St. Phone Seymour 4921

The closest address to 1034 Gilford Street is 1461 Harwood Street (W.H. Hogg, Manager, Vancouver Branch, Bank of Montreal, 586 Granville St.).

Looking at the directories for 1913 and 1915 doesn’t resolve the question.

In 1913, there is no mention of a William Hogg associated with any bank.

Henderson’s Greater Vancouver City Directory, 1913, Part 1, page 922, lists only two William Hoggs, and they are both in the 1914 list (above); both are different from W.H. Hogg.

  • Hogg, Wm h 2171 4th Av. W.
  • Hogg, Wm J. 2073 3rd Av. W.

The 1915 directory has two William Hoggs who are in banking. Henderson’s Greater Vancouver City Directory, 1915, page 712 lists:

  • Hogg, Wm mgr Can Bank of Com h Cartier Av cor Balfour Av
  • Hogg, Wm h 605a Hamilton

Based on this information, William Hall Hogg is the most likely resident of 1034 Gilford Street in 1914.
