Earl Bradford Howes was a civil engineer. He lived at 1987 Beach Avenue in 1910, and at 1940 Beach Avenue from 1911 to 1912.

Earl was born on March 11, 1881 in Hastings, Dakota County, Minnesota. His father was George Wilmur Howes (1855-1918); his mother was Mary Katherine Bradford (1857-1892).

In 1895 and 1900, he was living in Hastings, Minnesota.

Earl was married in Minnesota on May 26, 1906, to Ruth A. Polson. Ruth was born on January 31, 1888 in Minnesota.

Earl arrived in the Vancouver area by about 1909. On September 1, 1909, he married Sophia Ann Barbara De Wette. She was born on October 10, 1880, in London, England; her father was Lewis De Wette, who was from Belgium; her mother was Ann, who was Scottish.

In 1910, Earl was living at 1987 Beach Avenue, and was an engineer with the Great Northern Railway Company. That year, Earl, along with Albert Howard MacNeill and James Henry Kennedy, petitioned the British Columbia Legislature for legislation to incorporate the Penticton Railway Company. The railway was to run from Penticton to near Osoyoos Lake. [The railway appears not to have been successful, because the Defunct Railway Companies Act, Statutes of British Columbia, 1926-27, dissolved the company.]

In 1911, Earl was living at 1940 Beach Avenue. He had established a business as a consulting and contracting engineer, with an office No. 414 in the Pacific Building, 744 West Hastings Street. He specialized in railway location and construction, land drainage and irrigation, plans, surveys and reports.

In 1912, Earl applied for a building permit to build a frame garage at Beach Avenue and Chilco Street. [Daily Building Record, January 31, 1912, page 1]:

In 1912, Earl and Lawrence Manning Proctor (1865-1937) had established a building and contracting business called Howes & Proctor. Their offices were in No. 414 of the Pacific Building. They applied for building permits to build a series of houses on Collingwood Road, near 25th Avenue.

In 1913, Earl moved to 345 West 12th Avenue. Howes & Proctor moved their offices to the new World Building at the corner of Pender Street and Beatty Street.

In September 1914, Earl went from Vancouver to Seattle, on his way to Los Angeles.

Between 1930 and 1940, Sophia married Percy Paul Smith, who was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 4, 1880. Percy’s parents were Frederick F. Smith and Abbie R. Smith (possibly née Reeder). Percy had been married before, to Constance Waddington. Percy and Sophia were living in Los Angeles, California in 1940; he was a painter for the school system. When Percy registered with the United States military in 1942, he was living at 1842 West 41st Place in Los Angeles. Percy died in Los Angeles on December 23, 1955. It appears that Sophia died in California in July 1968. [Note: October 16, 2014: this paragraph and the source notes for Sophia Ann Barbara Dewette are updated from an earlier version.]

On September 24, 1924, in Los Angeles, Earl married Maude A. Atwood. She was born about 1894 in Vermont, USA.

In 1930, Earl and Maude were living in Long Beach, California, with Maude’s family. In 1940, Earl was still in Long Beach, living in the same residence as Maude’s mother; Maude does not appear at this address.

Earl died in Los Angeles on September 2, 1941. He was buried in Sunnyside Cemetery in Long Beach, California.

Maude died in Los Angeles on June 14, 1974. She was buried in Sunnyside Cemetery in Long Beach, California.

Children

Anita Bertha Howes

Anita appears to be Earl’s step-child. Anita was born on March 18, 1904, in Yokohama, Japan. Her father was Samuel H. Kuhn; her mother was Sophia Ann Barbara Dewette. On November 14, 1927, in Los Angeles, California, Anita married George William Cunningham. George’s father was Roger Cunningham; his mother was Agnes Trainor.

In 1930, George and Anita were living in Los Angles. On September 26, 1930, Anita became a naturalized US citizen.

Anita died on May 21, 2000, in Alhambra, California.

Wilmur Earl Howes

Earl Bradford Howes and Ruth Amanda Polson had a son, Wilmur Earl Howes, who was born on February 25, 1908, in Everett, Snohomish County, Washington State. Wilmur married Laura Blencoe, who was born on December 11, 1909, in Pleasant Prairie, Minnesota. Wilmur died in August 1986 in St Paul, Minnesota. Laura died on 11 Jan 1998 in St Paul, Minnesota.

Alexander Bradford Howes

Earl and Sophia had a son, Alexander Bradford Howes, who was born about 1911, probably in Vancouver. In 1932, in Los Angeles, Alexander married Laura Jean Shipley. Alexander died in 1935.

Lutz, 49, of 1501 Harvard boulevard, Belmont, was discovered in his sealed car on a lonely side road two miles west of the Skvline boulevard yesterday, deputies of the sheriffs office reported today. Deputy Sheriff Peter Bolich estimated Lutz, who was last seen alive last Monday, had been dead for two or three days. He reported a hose had been attached to the car’s exhaust pipe and strung through a front window. Two notes found in the dead man’s pocket read, ‘I’m just getting tired of the struggle. Please don’t blame Mildred,’ and ‘Mildred, I love you more than anything else in the world. Sorry it had to be this way.’ Police said the notes were addressed to Lutz’s parents and Mrs. Mildred W. Moore, 1853 Sacramento street, San Francisco, who, according to friends, had planned to marry him. Lutz, who was employed by a painting company, was a member of the San Mateo County Horsemen’s association and the Painters’ union of San Mateo. He leaves his parents, Nelson Lutz of San Francisco and Mrs. Blanche De Arnaz of Belmont, and two sisters, Mrs. Leora du Jardin of San Francisco and Mrs. Hilda Kayer of Belmont.
