Blanchet, Herbert Hunton (1871-1949)

Herbert Hunton Blanchet was a salesman for smelting and metal refining companies. He lived at 2062 Beach Avenue in 1913 and 1915.

He was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on May 29, 1871. He was sometimes called Ludger Herbert Hunton Blanchet. His father was Ludger Blanchet (1839-1917), who was an accountant in the Post Office department. Herbert’s mother was Marie Amelia Hunton (1850-1928).

By 1891, Herbert was working as a clerk. By 1901, he was a “commercial traveller” (salesman).

Herbert’s First Marriage

On June 26, 1906, in Vancouver, he married Irene Isabella (or Bell) Lockhart. She was born on September 18, 1885, in Newcastle, Ontario. Her father was Charles Beardsall Lockhart (1861-1933); her mother was Agnes Henry (1867- After the wedding, they went to Ottawa to live. Their daughter, Audrey Angelique Blanchet, was born in Toronto, Ontario, on May 13, 1908.

In July 1909, Herbert, Isabella, and Audrey moved to Vancouver. By 1910, Herbert was working as a travelling salesman. He was living at 971 Westminster Avenue, which soon was called Main Street.

By 1911, the Vancouver directories show Herbert as living at 1423 Cotton Drive in Vancouver. The 1911 census, however, has him living at 1839 Morton Avenue, and working as a commercial traveller. According to the 1911 census, Irene was living with her parents in Atlin, British Columbia.

In 1913, Herbert was the sales manager for the Great Western Smelting and Refining Company; he was living at 2062 Beach Avenue.

In 1914, he was a salesman for the Great Western Smelting Company. He was living at 1788 Haro Street. In 1915, he was the manager of the Canadian Metal Company; he was again at 2062 Beach Avenue. He did not appear in the Vancouver directories after 1915.

Irene’s Second Marriage

Herbert’s and Irene’s marriage seems to have ended shortly after their return to Vancouver. By about 1913 Irene was living with Charles Leonard Youngman. He was born on September 15, 1887, in Bournemouth, England. His father was Henry Youngman; his mother was Florence or Clara. Irene and Charles may have been married, perhaps somewhere other than British Columbia. In 1913, their daughter, Vera Natalie Youngman, was born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

In 1915, Charles enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He returned to Prince Rupert after the war. He became an employee of the provincial government liquor stores.

Irene died in Prince Rupert on January 19, 1925. She was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Prince Rupert.

On April 3, 1926, in Prince Rupert, Charles married Catherine Roy, who was a widow. She was born on September 13, 1901, in Glasgow, Scotland. Her father was Robert Duncan Sinclair Reid; her mother was Mary Campbell. Charles and Catherine had at least one child: Charles Henry Youngman (1927-1985).

Catherine died on April 15, 1972. She was buried in Forest Lawn Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia. Charles died in Vancouver on July 2, 1972. He was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Prince Rupert.

Herbert’s Second Marriage

On March 2, 1918, in Moncton, New Brunswick, Herbert married Lorraine Florence Gauvin. She was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 1, 1901. Her father was Frederick W. Gauvin; her mother was Mary T. Kelly.

Herbert and Lorraine had twin sons, Wilfred Kelly Blanchet, and Herbert Hunton Blanchet, who were born on January 8, 1919.

Herbert devoted a lot of his time to experiments on black walnut trees, leading some people to call him “The Walnut King.” He had a large plantation of walnut trees and other types of trees at Meech Lake, near Ottawa, and he exported seeds and trees to the United States, Europe and elsewhere in the world.

Herbert and Lorraine were divorced in 1939. It appears that Herbert did not re-marry.

Herbert died in Ottawa on March 6, 1949. He was buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.

On July 31, 1940, in Vernon, Vermont, Lorraine married Emerson Northrup Handy. He was born in West Falmouth, Massachusetts, on April 10, 1897. His father was Frank Handy; his mother was Ada Northrup. Emerson died on May 4, 1993. He was buried in Massachusetts National Cemetery, in Bourne, Massachusetts.

Lorraine died in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 20, 1993. She was buried in Massachusetts National Cemetery, in Bourne, Massachusetts.

Children

Herbert and Irene had the following child.

Audrey Angelique Blanchet

Audrey Angelique Blanchet was born in Toronto, Ontario, on May 13, 1908.

She married Harold E. Gregg, who was an automobile dealer. He was born in Washington State on March 24, 1905. In 1930 and 1940, Harold and Audrey were living in Portland, Oregon.

Harold died in Clackamas, Oregon, on August 22, 1996.

Audrey died in Oregon (possibly Portland) on March 28, 2010.

Herbert and Lorraine had twin sons.

Wilfred Kelly Blanchet

Wilfred Kelly Blanchet was born on January 8, 1919.

He married Doris Kathleen Swinamer. She was born in Martin Point, Nova Scotia, on June 23, 1922. She became a naturalized United States citizen in 1953.

Wilfred died in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, on November 24, 1999.

Doris died in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, on August 24, 2002.

Herbert Hunton Blanchet was born on January 8, 1919.

He served with the United States Army Air Corps during the Second World War.

He died on Oct. 16, 1990. He was buried in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, Massachusetts.
