William Edward Emmons was a dentist. He lived at 1857 Nelson Street from 1904 to 1911.

He was born in Belleville, Ontario on September 2, 1861. His father was Richard Emmons (born January 19, 1831 in England); his mother was Sarah Eliza Fretts (born May 11, 1838; died after 1911, possibly in Montreal. He studied dentristry with Dr. Neelands of Lindsay, Ontario, from 1879 to 1882. Then he went to Manitoba, where he worked with Dr. Benson until he set up his own office in 1884. From 1887 to 1890, he studied at the Chicago College of Dental Surgery, and he obtained a degree in dentistry in 1890.

On June 11, 1891, in Winnipeg, he married Ellen Jane McCrossan. She was born in Chatham, Ontario, on December 19, 1866 (or 1865). Her father was Thomas McCrossan (1834-1927); her mother was Jane (“Jennie”) Elizabeth Macdonald (1841-1932). Ellen was a pianist and singer who had studied music in New York.

The Emmons family moved to Vancouver about 1901 or 1902. After renting a house at 837 Davie Street in 1903, they moved to their new house at 1857 Nelson Street in 1904.

William maintained his dental practice in Vancouver. Ellen continued her interest in music; she was a member of the Women’s Musical Club of Vancouver.

Dr. Emmons was planning to build another house at 1203 Matthews Avenue in Vancouver’s Shaughnessy Heights. However, he became ill and he died in Vancouver on October 7, 1911. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

After Dr. Emmons died, Mrs. Emmons sold 1857 Nelson Street to Col. John McLarty MacMillan. Mrs. Emmons moved for a short time to 1900 Comox Street, which had been the home of her brother, John Alexander McCrossan. By 1914, the family was at 1203 Matthews Avenue near Selkirk Avenue.

Ellen Jane Emmons died in Vancouver on November 28, 1942. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

William Edward Emmons and Ellen Jane McCrossan had the following children.

Mabel Emmons

Mabel Emmons (or Maybelle McCrossan Emmons) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 24, 1893. She died in Winnipeg on May 24, 1902.

Edward Fretts Emmons

Edward Fretts Emmons was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 9, 1894.

He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War, and later entered the mining business.

On September 12, 1923, in Vancouver, he married Blanche Margaret Babbit. She was born in Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan on June 10, 1895. Her father was Charles Rupert Babbit; her mother was Mary Smith Grieve.

Edward died August 3, 1985, in West Vancouver, British Columbia. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Blanche died on November 18, 1972, in Vancouver. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

William Frank Emmons

William Frank Emmons was born in Winnipeg on July 14, 1896.

During the First World War, he served with the Royal Canadian Artillery. After the war, he went to McGill University in Montreal, and stayed there for three years, followed by five years at the Mayo Clinic. In 1932, he returned to Vancouver, and practiced as a neuro-surgeon.

He married Helen Alice Olsen. She was born on March 31, 1908, in Superior, Wisconsin. Her father was Peter Olsen; her mother was Andrea Peterson. Helen died in Vancouver on October 4, 1984. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

William Frank Emmons died in Vancouver on November 6, 1988. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver on November 10, 1988.

Richard Conrad Emmons

Richard Conrad (Con) Emmons was born in Winnipeg on August 28, 1898. He attended the University of British Columbia, and became a geologist. He taught at the University of Wisconsin – Madison for 45 years; he retired in 1969.

On June 8, 1926, he married Pearl Elizabeth Hocking. She died on March 19, 1985.

He died on September 4, 1993.
