Selden trucks were for heavier loads. George Baldwin Selden (1846-1922) had invented a combustion engine to power four-wheeled vehicles. He applied for a patent in 1879, which he finally received in 1895. For many years he claimed licence fees from other automobile manufacturers.

A group of manufacturers, including Henry Ford, sued Mr. Selden. In 1905, Mr. Selden started the Selden Motor Vehicle Company. By 1911, the Ford lawsuits succeeded in defeating the patent claim. Mr. Selden later began making trucks.

“Shortly after midnight last night Mr. Eugene B. MILTENBERGER died of pleuro-pneumonia at the residence of his mother, Mrs. Mary A. MILTENBERGER, 1623 Missouri avenue. Mr. MILTENBERGER had been suffering for a week past and yesterday his physicians deemed it advisable to telegraph his wife, who, with a daughter, was at a summer resort in the East, to return at once. In the absence of his wife and child Mr. MILTENBERGER had been stopping at his mother’s home, at the number above given. That lady had also gone East for a short period of recreation and was thus away from the death-bed of her son.

The deceased was the son of the late Eugene MILTENBERGER, Sr., at one time in the banking business on Main street, when the old firm of Body, Miltenberger & Co., existed. Deceased was married to the daughter of Mr. James M. FRANCISCUS, Vice-President of the Third National Bank. He was at the time of his death about 35 years of age, and was one of a large family of boys who are in business with well-known houses, and who survive him. Among the brothers are Ferdinand, employed in the Mechanics Bank; Guy, employed by H. T. Simon, Gregory & Co., Frank and Joseph, residing at 3412 Washington avenue, and John, who was associated with Eugene in the real estate business at the time of the latter’s death.

The wife is expected to arrive in the city today, and all arrangements for the funeral have been deferred until her wishes can be consulted. The place of business of E. G. MILTENBERGER & Co., 804 Chestnut street, is closed today because of this somewhat sudden death of the head of the firm.”

St. Louis Post-Dispatch (St. Louis, Missouri), July 8, 1887, page 5, column 3: “The remains of the late E.B. Miltenberger were buried in Bellefontaine this morning. The funeral ceremony and interment were private, only members of the family and very intimate friends of the deceased being present.”
