McKinnell, Colin Stanley (1880-1963) and Stewart Condy McKinnell (1882-1942)

Two McKinnell brothers lived at 1983 Beach Avenue from 1914 to 1920.

Colin Stanley McKinnell was a carpenter who lived at 1983 Beach Avenue in 1914.

Stewart Condy McKinnell was a warehouseman who lived at 1983 Beach Avenue from 1915 to 1920.

Their brother, Archibald James McKinnell, was a telephone electrician who also lived in Vancouver.

Another brother, William Clarke McKinnell, was a member of the Manitoba legislative assembly in the 1920s and 1930s.

 

Family Background

The McKinnell brothers were part of a family of at least 10 children.

Their parents were William McKinnell (1834-1923) and Catherine Sarah Perkins (1844-1904).

William McKinnell was a chemist in Northampton, England. On November 14, 1867, in Northampton, he married Catherine (“Kate”) Sarah Perkins.

William’s business lasted for about 60 years. In 1894 he was the executor of the estate of William Richard Clarke, who was another chemist in Northampton.

Kate died in Northampton on May 24, 1904.

After Kate’s death, William remained in business for several years.

William died in Northampton on August 13, 1923.

William Clarke McKinnell: Manitoba Politician

The fourth child, and the oldest of the McKinnell boys, was William Clarke McKinnell, who was born in Northampton on September 29, 1873. He was a student at Northampton Grammar School and Bedford Modern School.

He was originally going to be a chemist, like his father, but in 1892 he went to Manitoba. At first he homesteaded in Melita in southwestern Manitoba. In 1902 he moved to a farm near Teulon, about 60 kilometres north of Winnipeg. About 1906 he opened a general store in Teulon.

He was active in local politics in Teulon, and served as a member of Manitoba’s legislative assembly from 1920 to 1936.

He died in Winnipeg on October 27, 1939.

 

Stanley Colin McKinnell

Stanley Colin McKinnell was born in Northampton on September 28, 1880. (His name sometimes appears as “Colin Stanley McKinnell.”)

He worked as a carpenter.

He served during the Boer War in South Africa.

During the First World War he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

On September 28, 1922, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he married Coleen May Hempsall. She was born in Salford, England on April 30, 1893. Her parents were John Samuel Eagle D. Hempsall and Laura Jane (“Laurie”) Collins.

Stanley later worked as a watchman for Buckerfield’s Limited in Vancouver.

He died in Vancouver on August 21, 1963.

Coleen died in Vancouver on March 7, 1972.

Stanley and Coleen had two children: Rev. D.S. McKinnell (probably Donald Stewart McKinnell (1926-2016)); and Joan McKinnell (who died in 2003).

 

Stewart Condy McKinnell

Stewart Condy McKinnell was born on March 14, 1882, in Northampton, England.

In 1909 in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, he married Miriam Elsie Brown (often called “Elsie.”) She was born in Brixworth on June 8, 1882. Her parents were Alfred John Brown and Miriam Selina Buswell.

In 1920, Stewart was an employee of the Vancouver branch of of Martin-Senour Co. Ltd., a paint manufacturing firm. In the 1930s Stewart became a superintendent for the company. He retired about 1933.

Stewart died in Vancouver on March 15, 1942.

In 1955, Elsie was living at 2119 West 36th Avenue in Vancouver.

Elsie died in Vancouver on December 24, 1955.

It appears that Stewart and Elsie did not have any children.

 

Archibald James McKinnell

Archibald James McKinnell was born in Northampton on November 22, 1883.

He worked as a telephone electrician.

He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He was discharged from the military forces in 1919, at the time of the general demobilization.

In 1923, he went to live in California. In 1930 he was working for a telephone company in Alhambra, California.

About 1936 he returned to British Columbia. In 1937 he was an electrician, living with his brother, Stewart, at 343 East King Edward Avenue in Vancouver.

Archibald never married.

He died in Vancouver on December 26, 1951.

“William Clarke McKinnell (September 29, 1873 – October 27, 1939) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1920 to 1936.

McKinnell was born in Northampton, England, the eldest son of William McKinnell and Catherine Perkins, in a family of 10 children. He was educated at Bedford Modern School from 1887 until 1889. He registered with the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain as an apprentice to his father, a Northampton chemist, but abandoned this pursuit to go to Canada in 1892. By 1894 he was homesteading in Melita, Manitoba but later moved to Teulon, Manitoba where he opened the town’s first store, McKinnell and Wood General Store. In 1901, McKinnell married Christina Margaret Wood. He served as chair of the school board in Teulon, Manitoba from 1907 to 1921 and was appointed as chair of the Winnipeg Suburban Municipal Board in 1925. . . . After retiring from politics, he worked as a supervisor of municipalities. McKinnell died at home in Winnipeg at the age of 66.”
