Eliza Blanche Brough ran a grocery store and restaurant at 1897 Beach Avenue, from about 1899 to 1907.

Eliza was born in London, England on July 14, 1861 (although some sources say that she was born in Clifton, Gloucestershire). Her father was Charles Leal; her mother was Eliza Charlotte Susanne Rapit.

Charles Leal was born about 1819 in Scotland. On August 11, 1854, in London, England, he married Eliza Charlotte Susan Rapit. She was born in 1828 in Yverdon, Switzerland [Yverdon-les-Bains, Wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yverdon-les-Bains.]

By 1865, Charles Leal was the manager of the Clifton Down Hotel in Bristol, England.

The hotel was near the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which had opened in 1864.

Charles Leal died in Clifton in 1867. In 1871, Charles’s widow, Eliza, was living in Clifton, along with five children, including her daughter, Eliza. In 1881, Eliza and four children (including her daughter, Eliza) were still living in Clifton.

On November 8, 1884, in Savannah, Georgia, Eliza Blanche Leal married Thomas Maurice (or Morris) Brough. Thomas was born on June 28, 1859, in London, England. It appears that his parents were Arthur Brough and Louisa Varney.

By 1891, Thomas and Eliza were living in England, where their daughter, Violet, was born. It appears that Thomas died before 1900.

By 1900, Eliza was living in on Beach Avenue in Vancouver. She was operating a grocery store and restaurant at “Sea View House,” which appears to be this modest building at 1897 Beach Avenue.

On September 21, 1905, in Vancouver, Eliza married Thomas Reilly, who was a building contractor. He was born on March 29, 1870, in Wattle Flat, New South Wales, Australia. His parents were John and Hannah Reilly.

Eliza’s mother, Eliza Charlotte Lewal, died in Bristol, England, in 1907.

By 1911, Thomas and Eliza were living in the Cedar Cottage area of South Vancouver.

By about 1926, Thomas had retired; he and Eliza were living at the foot of Pratt Road in Gibson’s Landing, British Columbia. For a short time, Thomas drove a Cadillac automobile on the primitive roads in the area, but he soon replaced the Cadillac with a more-practical Ford Model T.

Eliza died at Gibson’s Landing on March 29, 1939. She was buried at Seaview Cemetery in Gibson’s Landing.

On December 16, 1939, in Vancouver, Thomas married Helen Winn, who was the widow of William Whitehead Winn. Helen was born in Tunbridge Wells, England, on August 1, 1891. Her father was George Turner. Her mother was Fanny Ford.

Thomas died on July 6, 1940, in Vancouver. He was buried at Gibson’s Landing.

Helen was still living in Gibson’s Landing in 1945. She later married Frank Gibson. Helen died in Vancouver on January 12, 1981.

Thomas Brough and Eliza Leal had a daughter.

Violet Blanche Brough

Violet Blanche Brough was born in London, England, on February 1, 1891.

On October 12, 1910, in Vancouver, Violet married George Henry Arnott, who was a salesman. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, on November 17, 1888. His parents were William Clark Arnott and Annie Celeste Crick. This marriage ended in divorce in Vancouver on September 25, 1936.

George later married Ethel Howard Smith.

Violet died in North Vancouver on January 24, 1974.

George died in North Vancouver on July 16, 1976.

Ethel died in Burnaby, British Columbia, on April 1, 1984.

Thomas Reilly, upon his retirement here, had a Cadillac of about the vintage of this one transported by steamer to the whart at Gibson’s Landing. Occasionally, from his home at the foot of Pratt Road, before Gower Point Road had come into being, he drove along routes that had been built with horses for the use of horse and waggon. After a few years, Thomas sequestered his anomalous Cadillac—the only one of its kind in this vicinity—in his barn, and resorted to a more practical Model T ford.” [Includes photograph of Cadillac automobile.]
