“The history goes back to a July morning in 1899 when two men arrived in Vancouver from Montreal. They were Messrs. Andrew F. Gault, since deceased, who had founded Gault Brothers in Montreal in 1853, and James Rodger of the same city.

Their business here was speedily discovered, for before returning East all arrangements were complete for the opening of a branch business. There was no idea of a factory then. It was entirely a wholesale merchandise concern that was opened up in the upper floor and basement of a building on Hastings Street, where Woodward’s store now stands. From the floors between came the sound of pianos and the occasional bumping of a trunk, for a piano company and a trunk and bag company shared the same building.

A Mr. Chapman who came out from Montreal to take charge, died within a year, and in November, 1902, H.A. Stone became managing director, a position he held until his retirement in June of last year.”
