Kendall, John (1873-1935)

John Kendall was an accountant and auditor who lived at 1961 Comox Street from 1918 to 1925.

He was born on October 18, 1873 in Nottinghamshire, England. His parents were Richard Reed Kendall and Mary Kendall.

After a private school education, he went to the University of Nottingham. In 1895, he and became a chartered accountant in London, England.

He married Gertrude Skipworth. She was born on May 15, 1872, in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England.

Their only child, Richard, was born in London, England, on March 16, 1896.

John travelled to Canada about 1901. He went to Winnipeg for a short time, and he arrived in Vancouver in 1902.

In 1905 and 1906, he was a manager for Clarkson, Cross and Helliwell.

In 1906, he had his own accounting firm for a year.

From 1907 to 1913, Frank Crompton Sewell was with the firm, which was known as Kendall, Sewell and Company. (Frank Crompton Sewell lived at 1102 Denman Street in 1903 and at 1224 Denman Street in 1904 and 1905.) Other associates of the firm appeared from time to time.

In 1914, Robert B. Barr joined the firm, which became Kendall, Barr and Company. John was the auditor for the City of Vancouver.

John continued his accounting practice through the 1920s and 1930s.

He was a member of the Institute of Chartered Accounts of England and Wales, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Canada. He was a vice-president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in British Columbia. He was a member and vice-president of the Vancouver Stock Exchange.

He belonged to the Western Club in Vancouver and the Royal Colonial Institution of London.

His recreational activities included football and rowing.

John died in Vancouver on February 17, 1935.

Gertrude died in Murrayville, British Columbia, on October 16, 1964. She was buried in the Murrayville Cemetery in Murrayville.

 

John and Gertrude had one son.

 

Richard Aufield Kendall

Richard Aufield Kendall was born in London, England, on March 16, 1896.

In the 1915 Vancouver directory, Richard was an employee with the accounting firm of Buttar and Chiene. (William Shaw Buttar (1867-1838) was a chartered accountant who lived at 2067 Pendrell Street from 1910 to 1913 and from 1916 to 1921.)

Richard enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

On February 7, 1920, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Richard married Dorothy Oehler Evans. She was born about 1898 in Yonkers, New York. Her father was Harvey Cole Evans. Her mother was Mary Oehler.

By 1930, Richard and Dorothy were living in Seattle, Washington, along with their daughter, Sheila, who was born in Washington about 1930. Richard was an accountant.

Richard became a naturalized United States citizen on August 9, 1930.

In 1940, Richard and Dorothy were living in Seattle, along with the family of Dorothy’s sister, Florence. Richard was an accountant for a firm of plumbing contractors.

In 1942, Richard registered with the United States military draft. He was living at 4310 Dinsmore Street in Seattle. His employer was G.P. Halferty and Company, which was a fish brokerage company in Seattle.

It appears that Richard was living in La Conner, Washington in the 1960s. He died in Washington State in April 1966.

He is an Englishman by birth, and practised in London until 1901, when he decided to practise in Canada. After a short residence in Winnipeg he came to Vancouver in 1901, establishing the present business in 1906 as John Kendall & Co. Between the period of his arrival and the establishment of his own business he was practising with Messrs. Clarkson, Cross and Helliwell. He is an F.C.A. of the Province of British Columbia, A.C.A. of the Dominion of Canada, and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. In partnership with Mr. Kendall is Mr. Frank Crompton Sewell, who was born in the great cotton spinning town of Bolton, Lancashire, and has spent most of his life in the Dominion.

From 1887 to 1881 he served in that wonderfully versatile body, the Royal North West Mounted Police, and knows Alberta from end to end. He came to British Columbia in 1895, and has held the commission of Justice of the Peace of the Province for the past twelve years. His connection with the profession of accountancy began in 1905, when he was admitted as an F.C.A. in the Province. He joined Mr. Kendall as partner in 1907.”
