Deane, Evans Brown (1857-1950)

Evans Brown Deane was a realtor, athlete and yachting enthusiast. He lived at 2057 Pendrell Street from 1903 to 1907 and at 1119 Chilco Street from 1908 to 1920.

Evans Brown Dean was born on October 9, 1857, in New South Wales, Australia. His father was John Deane (1820-1893), who was a professor of music and the conductor of the New South Wales Philharmonic Orchestra. Evans’s mother was Ann Martha Perrier (1838-1870).

Evans went to San Francisco, California, in 1876. He began working as a clerk with Joseph M. Shotwell, who was a stockbroker in San Francisco.

 

He travelled to British Columbia in 1880 as a purchasing agent for a contractor who was building tunnels on the Canadian Pacific Railway’s line.

By 1882, he had established himself as a printer in San Francisco.

On August 5, 1885, in San Francisco, Evans married Sophie Caroline Searle. She was born in San Francisco on May 6, 1862. Her father was John Searle (1818-1879). Her mother was Sophia Laidley (1821-1905).

By 1891, he was a real estate broker and insurance agent in Vancouver.

He carried on his realty business until about 1918. He also built commercial buildings in Vancouver and New Westminster.

He played many sports, including cricket, baseball, and cycling. He and his family were most well-known for their interests in yachting. Evans was a life member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club.

In 1930 and 1940, Evans and Sophie were living in Richmond, Washington.

Sophie died in Vancouver on October 1, 1940. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Evans died in Vancouver on November 30, 1950. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Evans Searle Deane

Evans Searle Deane was born in San Francisco, California, on October 14, 1887.

On August 13, 1913, in Vancouver, he married Maud Pierce, who worked as a manicurist. She was born in Joplin, Missouri about 1888. Her father was Columbus N, Parnell. Her mother was Maggie Graham.

In March 1916, in Vancouver, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War. On December 4, 1916, he was discharged from the force because he had defective vision.

In 1930 and 1940, Evans and Maude were living in Richmond, Washington.

Evans died on February 1, 1987, in Riverside County, California.

 

Sophie Laidley Deane

Sophie Laidley Deane was born in San Francisco, California, about 1890. She became active in the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, and she won many yachting races.

On August 23, 1911, in Vancouver, Sophie married Percival Garrett Sills, who was a lumberman. He was born on August 11, 1884, in Winchester, Ontario. His father was George Percival Sills. His mother was Myra Green.

Percival worked for H.R. MacMillan’s lumber companies.

Percival died in Victoria, British Columbia, on February 26, 1953. He was buried in Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria.

 

Ernest Deane

Ernest Deane was born in Vancouver on October 15, 1892. He worked as a gasoline engineer.

Ernest died in Vancouver on April 18, 1914.

 

Catherine Louise Deane

Catherine Louise Deane was often called “Louise.”

She was born on August 13, 1896, in Vancouver. Like her sister, Sophie, she was active in the Vancouver yachting scene.

On April 15, 1922, in Bellingham, Washington, she married Harold Alfred Jones. He was born on May 8, 1894, in Oakland, California. His father was Henry Albert Jones (1851-1923). His mother was Clara B. Shaefer (1862-1933).

Harold was the president of the Vancouver Tug Boat Company and Vancouver Shipyards Limited. He was also commodore of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club for several years in the 1940s.

Harold and Louise separated in 1949. Harold died in Vancouver on December 24, 1956.

In 1976, Louise married Roy Ash.

Harold and Louse had a daughter, Beverley Louise Jones, who was born in Vancouver on October 11, 1929. After Harold Jones’s death in 1956, Louise and Beverley were involved in a legal dispute over the disposition of Harold’s extensive estate. The case went to the Supreme Court of Canada, which concluded that Louise should receive an increased allowance over the amount that Harold had originally provided for her.

One of Vancouver’s true pioneers, Mrs. Deane was the wife of Evans J. [sic] “Jimmy” Deane, pioneer real estate man and yachtsman. She was born in San Francisco in May, 1862. Married in 1885, the Deanes came to Vancouver two years later, one year after the great fire.

Mr. Deane, who retired from the real estate business in 1918, and Mrs. Deane were greatly interested in yachting. In 1909, Mr. Deane sailed a sailing sloop against Ted Geary of Seattle. Later, Mr. Deane purchased the cruiser Davey Jones, one of the outstanding ships of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club fleet of that time. He is a life member of the yacht club.

Mrs. Deane is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. P.G. Sills and Mrs. H.A. Jones; one son, Evans S. Deane, of Seattle; four grandchildren, Percival Deane Sills, John L. Sills, Margaret Lorraine Sills and Beverley Jones; two brothers, George and James Fearle [sic: Searle], San Francisco.”

“Lumberman, Percy Sills, Dies in City,” Victoria Daily Colonist, February 27, 1953, page 2:

“A well-known Victoria and West Coast lumberman, Percy G. Sills, died suddenly at Royal Jubilee Hospital yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Sills was taken to the hospital yesterday after he had suffered a stroke while on business in town. He was in his 69th year.

A veteran of 50 years lumbering in the province, Mr. Sills was manager of the H.R. McMillan Spruce and Pine Export division for more than 25 years.

He came to Victoria in 1940, and during the Second World War served as secretary of aero Timber Products of Vancouver, at a dollar a year, producing spruce for aircraft construction.

His is survived by his widow, Sophie, at home at 2595 Lansdowne Road; one son, Percy; one daughter, Mrs. C.G. Heristerman, and seven grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his son, John Loring, killed while serving as a fighter pilot with the RCAF in September, 1943.”
