Barney’s Early Years

In 1889, Barney passed the examinations for admission to high school.

In 1892, Barney was one of over 1000 people who signed a petition to the British Columbia legislature to exclude Chinese and Japanese workers from working underground in British Columbia collieries.

In 1893 Barney was working at Union Mines on Vancouver Island.

On December 8, 1893, probably at or near Union Mines, Barney married Rebecca Timothy. She was born in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales, on February 3, 1874 (although the marriage certificate gave her birthplace as Pennsylvania). Rebecca’s parents were Griffith Timothy (1854-1931) and Agnes Browning (1855-1874).

Life in Vancouver

Barney first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1907. He was an employee of the Stanley Park Brewery, and it appears that he was living on the brewery property, as he was in 1908.

In 1911, Barney was working as a teamster. Sometime afterward, he went back to being a miner.

When Barney’s father, George Gartley, died in 1917, the obituaries said that Barney was living in Calgary, Alberta. (Although it is not certain, Barney may actually have been in Drumheller, Alberta, at that time.)

About this time Barney’s and Rebecca’s marriage was ending. Rebecca became ill, and by the time of the 1921 Canada census she was in an inmate in an institution.

In the 1921 Canada census Barney was living at 1946 Commercial Drive in Vancouver; he stated that was working as a miner.

In 1923, he sailed on the Princess Mary to Ketchikan, Alaska. It is not clear what he was planning to do in Alaska, although he gave “miner” as his occupation.

By the 1920s, Barney was in Drumheller, Alberta, where he worked at the Gouge mines and the Newcastle mine. He was a member of Local 69 of the United Mine Workers of America.

Barney died in Drumheller on March 22, 1932. He was buried in Drumheller Cemetery.

Rebecca died in Essondale, British Columbia on May 5, 1935.

Barney and Rebecca had two children, Walter Leslie Gartley and Stella Gartley.

Walter Leslie Gartley

Walter Leslie Gartley was born on May 9, 1895 (in Vancouver, according to some sources, but possibly elsewhere in British Columbia).

He worked as a machinist. About 1911 he injured his left eye while he was working in a foundry.

On November 1, 1915, in Vernon, British Columbia, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

In October 1916 he received a slight gunshot wound to his forehead, from which he apparently recovered.

In 1917, a shrapnel wound to Walter’s face was more serious. However, he remained with the Canadian forces until general demobilization in August 1919. It appears that he never recovered from his war injuries.

In 1919, in Lewes, Sussex, England, Walter married Charlotte Alice Fellows (possibly sometimes called Charlotte Alice Fellows Collins). She was born in Hastings, England, on November 3, 1893.

The Canadian military records indicated that Charlotte was living at 27 Lansdowne Place in Lewes, Sussex in 1919.

By 1921, Walter and Charlotte were living at 204 Glen Drive in Vancouver. Walter was employed as a blacksmith in a foundry.

Shortly afterward, Walter had become so ill that he had to enter an institution. He died in Essondale, British Columbia, on November 12, 1923. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Charlotte lived in British Columbia until the 1980s. She died in Vancouver on May 18, 1985. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Walter and Charlotte had two children.

Marjorie Alice Doreen Gartley (daughter of Walter Leslie Gartley)

Marjorie Alice Doreen Gartley was born in Hastings, England on February 20, 1917. She arrived in Canada in 1919, along with her mother.

It appears that she married Mr. St. Elois. In 1936, Marjorie Gartley was living with her mother at 1369 Graveley Street.

BC and Yukon Directory, 1936, page 739.

On March 27, 1937, in Vancouver, Marjorie married Albert Gore, who was a cook. He was born in Liverpool, England, about 1908. His parents were Joseph Thomas Gore (born 1882) and Elizabeth Anne Baker (1881-1955). (Elizabeth’s second husband was Thomas Cavanagh. Elizabeth died in Vancouver on August 5, 1955.)

Albert died in Ottawa, Ontario, on December 16, 1946. He was buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.

Marjorie later married Benjamin Arthur Hawley, who was a transit driver. He was born on May 18, 1905, in Barron, Wisconsin. His parents were Benjamin Franklin Hawley and Nina Stearnes. (Benjamin had been married before, in 1928, to Ada Sylvia Susanna Renikka. This marriage ended in divorce in New Westminster, British Columbia, on December 9, 1949.)

Marjorie died in Vancouver on April 18, 1971. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Benjamin died in Vancouver on December 21, 1978.

Walter Leslie Gartley, Junior (son of Walter Leslie Gartley)

Walter Leslie Gartley, Junior was born in Vancouver on December 6, 1918.

He was a sheet metal worker.

He married Doris Plume, who was born in Vancouver on February 18, 1921. Her parents were Arthur Plume (1881-1965) and Ada Marion Marshall (1882-1964).

Doris died in Vancouver on March 29, 1969. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Walter died in Vancouver on December 31, 1969. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Stella Margaret Gartley

Several sources refer to Stella Gartley as Barney’s daughter, although some people are not so sure that she was actually his daughter.

It appears that Stella was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on June 26, 1897. Her British Columbia birth certificate was based on a statutory declaration from her aunt, and on a baptismal record, which showed that Stella was baptized on October 14, 1897.

In 1901, she was “Estelle Gartly,” who was living with her mother, Rebecca, in Vancouver.

By 1911, she was Stella Gartley, who was the adopted daughter of Samuel and Harriet Brown.

On November 9, 1916, in Vancouver, Stella married Samuel Mirfield, who was a sailor-quartermaster. He was born in Bradford, England, about 1894. His parents were Samuel and Maude Mirfield. (This marriage ended in divorce, sometime before December 1919. On August 9, 1922, in Victoria, British Columbia, Samuel married May House.)

In 1917, Stella attempted to enter the United States for a visit to Seattle, Washington. She was using the name “Stella Gartley,” not “Stella Mirfield,” and she said that she was working as a laundress. She was “debarred” and not allowed to enter the United States.

On November 28, 1919, in Vancouver, Stella married Alf Olsen, who was a chauffeur. He was born in Vancouver about 1894. His parents were Ole Hellick Olsen and Christina Johnsen. Stella described her profession as “singer.”

In 1921, Stella was living at 1946 Commercial Drive in Vancouver, in the household of her uncle, Douglas Grant. Barney (Byron Gartley), Stella’s father, also appeared in Douglas Grant’s household.

In 1923, Stella was part of a musical performance at a Hastings Parent-Teacher Association gathering.

On June 4, 1932, in Vancouver, Stella married William Robert Gibson, who was a logger. He was born on April 1, 1884, in Nanaimo, British Columbia. His parents were William Gibson and Anna McDonald. This marriage ended in divorce in Vancouver on December 21, 1936. William died in Vancouver on October 12, 1972.

By 1942, Stella was married to James Caulfield, who was a farmer. He was born in Ireland on March 26, 1881.
