Perceval, Echlin (1858-1935)

Echlin Perceval was a carpenter and builder. He lived at 1964 Georgia Street from 1904 to 1909.

Echlin Perceval was born in Ontario (possibly on Wolfe Island) on October 7, about 1858 (some sources say 1857 or 1859). It appears that he was sometimes called “Robert Arthur Echlin Perceval” or “Arthur Robert Echlin Perceval.”

Echlin’s father was Henry Perceval (1826-1893), who was a farmer. Echlin’s mother was Harriett Echlin (1827-1920).

In the late 1880s, Echlin married Margaret Rae. She was born on March 13, 1861 (or 1863). (One source says that her last name was “Ferris,” but this name does not appear elsewhere for her.)

By 1890, Echlin was working as a carpenter in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

In 1898, Echlin appeared in the New Westminster directory. He was living in nearby Burnaby, British Columbia.

Echlin first appeared in the Vancouver directory in 1901. He was a wood worker, living at 628 Barnard Street.

Echlin worked as a wood turner, carpenter and builder during his time in Vancouver. He died in Vancouver on March 10, 1935.

Margaret died in Vancouver on September 27, 1935.

Echlin and Margaret had the following children.

 

Constance Emma Perceval

Constance Emma Perceval (sometimes called “Emma Constance Perceval”) was born on Wolfe Island, Ontario, on September 9, 1888.

On January 15, 1904, she married Edgar Bayliss, who was a musician. He was born on February 4, 1878 in England. His father was John Bayliss; his mother was Jane Orchard. (Edgar had a brother named Frederick Bayliss (1872-1967), who lived at 1835 Pendrell Street in 1903: Bayliss, Frederick (1872-1967); https://westendvancouver.wordpress.com/biographies-a-m/biographies-b/bayliss-frederick-1872-1967/.)

Edgar and Constance went to live in San Francisco, California. They had a daughter, also named Constance, who became the subject of a legal dispute.

In late 1906, Edgar sued Constance for divorce.

After the divorce, and Edgar continued to live in California. He was married two more times; those marriages also ended in divorce. Edgar died in Los Angeles, California, on August 7, 1952.

It appears that Constance married Mr. May. Constance died in Vancouver on March 27, 1911.

 

Neil Kenneth Perceval

Neil Kenneth Perceval was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia on June 12, 1891.

He never married.

In 1915, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

He was killed on April 10, 1917. His name appears on the Vimy Memorial.

 

Mona Wilhelmina Perceval

Mona Wilhelmina Perceval was born in Kingston Township, Ontario, on March 10, 1894.

On January 11, 1913, in New Westminster, British Columbia, she married John Clarence Johns, who was an engineer. He was born in Mission City, British Columbia, on April 7, 1893. His father was John Johns. His mother was Frances Wand. This marriage ended in divorce. John went to live in California. He died in Riverside County, California, on September 21, 1965.

On July 28, 1923, in Vancouver, Mona married Sidney John Boys, a “billiardist” who worked for Robert H. Cliburn’s billiard supply business in Vancouver. Sidney was born in Walsall, England, on April 9, 1885. His father was Thomas Boys. His mother was Annie Bird. This marriage ended in divorce. (Sidney later married Freda Osborne Longley. She was born in Crawley, Sussex, England, on June 28. 1902. Her father was Alfred Henry Longley. Her mother was Ada Dye. Sidney died in White Rock, British Columbia, on March 15, 1979. Freda died in White Rock on November 24, 1990.)

On December 10, 1937, in Vancouver, Mona married William Jennings Laugham, who was a mine operator. He was born about 1887 in Harvey, Illinois. His father was Samuel Walter Laugham. William’s mother was May Jennings.

No further information is available for Mona or for William Laugham.

 

Cyril Henry Perceval

Cyril Henry Perceval was born in Mattawa, Ontario, on August 7, 1896. He died in New Westminster, British Columbia on April 18, 1898.

 

Hermione Clair Perceval

Hermione Clair Perceval was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, on September 11, 1898. (She was often called “Clair” or “Clare.”)

On August 2, 1921, in Vancouver, she married Eric William Suffield, who was a seaman. He was born Eric William Saalfield (or Saalfeld) in Sutton, Surrey, England, on December 22, 1897. His father was William Saalfield (or Saalfeld). Eric’s mother was Rose Clara Natali (although one source says that her name was Rose Clare Duggen.)

Eric died in Vancouver on September 13, 1964.

Clare later married Edgar Albert Burnett, who was a lawyer. He was born in Ontario on April 19, 1887. His father was Albert Edgar Burnett (1860-1947). Edgar’s mother was Harriet (“Hattie”) Eleanor Caswell (1860-1955).

Albert died in Vancouver on February 26, 1971.

Clare died in Vancouver on January 17, 1981.

 

Cyril Perceval

Cyril Perceval was born in Vancouver on November 24, 1902.

He was a mariner.

On December 14, 1929, in Vancouver, Cyril married Jean Maxine Robinson. She was born in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, on September 18, 1906. Her father was Herman Fletcher Robinson. Her mother was Mary Jane Clark.

Cyril died in Lytton, British Columbia, on February 17, 1978.

Jean died in Vancouver on December 21, 1978.
