Arthur Evelyn Perman was an accountant who lived at 1849 Robson Street in 1917.
Arthur Evelyn Perman was born in 1876 in Whistley (or Twyford) in Wokingham district, Berkshire, England. His father was Arthur G. Perman (born about 1850 in Bristol, Gloucestershire), who was a railway station master in Norwood, Middlesex. His mother, Mary, was born in Bath, Somerset, about 1849.
In 1881, the Perman family was living at Ousollton Villa in Norwood, Middlesex.
According to the 1891 England and Wales census, Arthur G. Perman was the traffic superintendent for the government railway system in Ceylon. However, the family was living in Wimbledon, Surrey in England.
In 1900, Arthur Evelyn Perman married Caroline Banner. She was born on December 12, 1867, in London, England. Her father was Charles Banner.
In 1901, Arthur and Caroline were living in Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey. Arthur was a motor car salesman.
By 1904, Arthur and Caroline were at number 40, Overstrand Mansions.
Gilbert Keith Chesterton (better known as the author G.K. Chesterton) was living nearby, at number 60 in Overstrand Mansions in 1904. (Despite the nearness of their residences, there is no sign that Arthur knew Mr. Chesterton.)
In 1907, in Paddington, London, Arthur and Caroline had a daughter, Iris Barbara Perman (known as either “Iris” or “Barbara”).
In 1908, the Perman family was at 75 Southwold Mansions on Widley Road in South Paddington, England.
In April 1908, Arthur, Caroline and Iris sailed from Liverpool, England, on Allan Line’s R.M.S. Virginian.
The ship went to Quebec City, Quebec, and then to Montreal. The family’s destination on the trip was Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
If they stayed at all in Saskatoon, their time there was short. By 1910, Arthur appeared in the Vancouver directory. He was a cashier with Dow Fraser and Company, a firm of real estate, financial and insurance agents.
He appeared at the following addresses in Vancouver
1910 and 1911 | 1663 Barnard Street |
1912 to 1915 | Eton (or Eaton) Street (Vancouver Heights) |
1916 | no address under names |

He had the following series of occupations.

1936 | Insurance agent, Wilson and Company |
1937 and 1938 | Insurance agent and secretary, Ideal Burner Fuels Limited |
1939 to 1943 | Insurance agent |
1944 to 1955 (perhaps later) | Accountant, J. Boshard and Son Limited (building cleaning, sand blasting) |
In the fall of 1927, Arthur left the Vancouver Safety Deposit Company and started his own brokerage company, called Banner Agencies (probably after Caroline’s maiden name of Banner.)
In May 1928, the reason for Arthur’s departure from the safety deposit company became clear. Arthur and James Mcdowall Grosart (1874-1951) were charged with stealing $20,000 worth of bonds from a safety deposit box at the Vancouver Safety Deposit Company. According to the newspaper reports, Arthur pleaded guilty. Further information is not available in relation to Mr. Grosart’s charges; he later worked as an inspector for the British Columbia welfare department.
From 1929 to 1931, Arthur did miscellaneous work, including a short period where he set up a business called the “Secretarial Bureau.”
From 1932 to 1943, he was an insurance agent.
Sometime in the 1940s, Arthur’s and Caroline’s daughter, Iris, moved to Calgary, Alberta.
From 1944 to about 1955, Arthur was an accountant for J. Boshard and Son Limited. This company operated a building cleaning and sand blasting business.
Caroline died in Vancouver on December 9, 1949. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.
In 1956 and 1970, Arthur moved to Calgary, Alberta.
He died in Calgary on September 22, 1970.
Arthur and Caroline had a daughter.
Iris Barbara C. Perman
Iris Barbara C. Perman was born in 1907 in Paddington, London, England. (She was sometimes called “Iris” and sometimes “Barbara.”)
She came to Canada with her parents in 1908, and stayed with them in Vancouver until sometime in the 1940s.
In 1948 and 1949, she was upstairs at 1226 West 12th Avenue in Calgary. I 1948, she was a stenographer for the Canadian Fire Insurance Company.
In 1952, she was at number 3, 1327 West 12th Avenue in Calgary.
It appears that she did not marry.
She died in Calgary on October 21, 1978.
