James Lockington was a teacher and school principal. He lived at 1096 Denman Street from 1911 to 1913.

James Lockington was born in 1861 in Rugby, Warwickshire, England. His father was James Lockington (about 1807-1891), a tailor who was born in Dunchurch, Warwickshire, about 1807. His mother was Maria (probably Bonsor) (about 1818-1877), who was born in Clipston, Northamptonshire, about 1818.

James studied at London University. By 1881, he was a headmaster in a private school in Kensington, London.

By 1891, he was a teacher of classics in Liverpool, Lancashire. He was an “English Master” at Coleraine Academical Institution when he gave a reference for the “Ladies’ School.”

In 1892, in West Derby, Lancashire, James married Janet Flaws, who was also a school teacher. It appears that she was born in Londonderry, Ireland, about 1865. James and Janet lived in Litherland, Lancashire, after their marriage.

In 1893, one of Janet’s students, Edith M. Johnstone, was successful in a musical knowledge examination.

James and Janet had a son, Fred (sometimes called “Eric”), who was born in Litherland in 1893 or 1894.

In 1894, the family was living at 29 Sefton Road in Litherland. James and Janet were operating a school called “Summerland House.”

James was an associate member of the Liverpool Geographical Society.

In 1901, James and Janet were still working as teachers in Litherland.

By 1911, James, Janet and Eric were in Vancouver. They lived at 1096 Denman Street from 1911 to 1913.

About 1912, James started the Lockington Preparatory School (sometimes called the Vancouver Grammar School). The school was at 1409 Beach Avenue, which is where James and his family also lived from 1914 to 1932. The students in the school were “the Sons of Gentlemen in Business and Professional Life.” The uniform for the students was a black cap with red stripes.

It appears that Janet went back to England. She may have died in Wirral, Cheshire, in 1919.

James continued to operate the school through the 1920s and early 1930s. It appears that he went back to England about 1933, and that he died in Litherland in 1939.

Frederick Eric James Lockington

Frederick Eric James Lockington (sometimes called “Fred” or “Eric”) was born on November 21, 1893 (some sources say November 17, 1894).

In 1912 and 1913 he was in Vancouver, working as a clerk with Palmer, Burmester and von Graevenitz. In 1914, he was a clerk with Canadian European Investment Corporation.

On November 26, 1914, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War. He later served with the South Lancashire Regiment of the British military forces. He received a military cross.
