James Thomas Summerfield was an insurance and  real estate agent. He lived at 1815 Alberni Street in 1910 and 1911, at 1154 Gilford Street from 1914 to 1916, and again at 1815 Alberni Street in 1917 and 1918.

James Thomas Summerfield was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England, on May 4, 1875. His father was Fred Summerfield, who was a butcher. His mother was Elizabeth Williams.

James served as a trooper with the Yeomanry Guards in the Boer War.

He arrived in Montreal, Quebec, in 1903, and served for three years as a captain in the reserve army.

In 1905, he married Beatrice Vida Barnard (probably in Montreal). She was born in England on February 15, 1884. Her parents were William and Harriett Barnard.

James first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1907. He was with Smith and Summerfield (real estate agents, whose offices were at 417 Richards Street), and he was rooming at “The Maples,” 300 Howe Street.

James and Beatrice lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

By 1909, James was the manager of Loewen and Harvey’s insurance department. “Charles J. Loewen’s and Richard G. Harvey’s real estate and fire insurance business was at 310 West Hastings Street.)

James worked as an insurance agent for most of his career in Vancouver.

This 1919 advertisement for his brokerage firm listed his services, and stated that he had established the firm in 1907.

About 1919, the Summerfields moved to North Vancouver. They lived at 1401 Dempsey Road.

In 1923, James formed an insurance and financial agency business with Robert Kerr Houlgate (1867-1936)

In the 1920s, James served as a councillor on the North Vancouver District Council. He promoted the building of the North Vancouver General Hospital. He was a member of the Vancouver Club.

Beatrice was active in the I.O.D.E. (Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire), which is a Canadian women’s charitable association.

James retired in 1946. He died in North Vancouver on September 19, 1955.

Beatrice continued to live at the Dempsey Road home until 1970. She died in North Vancouver on July 31, 1970.

James and Beatrice had a son.

 

Roy Hodson Summerfield

Roy Hodson Summerfield was born in Vancouver on November 23, 1909.

For a time he was a service station manager.

On June 1, 1934, in Vancouver, he married Marguerite Edith Martin. She was born in Passburg, Alberta, on February 19, 1908. Her father was George Martin. Her mother was Minnie Alice Lucy King.

Roy later worked as a manufacturers agent.

In 1950 he received a United States patent for a newspaper vending machine.

Roy was a member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club.

Roya and Marguerite were divorced in Vancouver on April 16, 1957. (Marguerite died in North Vancouver on July 17, 1988.)

Roy later married Marnie, who died before 2005.

Roy published an autobiography called My Ninety Four Years on Planet Earth.

Roy died in Vancouver on February 12, 2005.
