McKercher, Maximillian (“Max”) (1879-1965)

Maximillian (“Max”) A. McKercher was an accountant and office manager of Little Brothers Fur Sales Agency Limited. He lived at 1154 Gilford Street from 1914 to 1918; at 1947 Pendrell Street in 1919 and 1920; and at 2046 Beach Avenue in 1921 and 1922.

It appears that Max McKercher was born in Montreal, Quebec, about 1879. His father was Daniel McKercher, who was a tailor. Max’s mother was Mary Anna Olivier.

In 1909, Max was living in Seattle, Washington.

On September 29, 1909, in Victoria, British Columbia, Max married Celina Florentia Finzloff (sometimes called “Selma” or “Selma Alma Firzlaff”). She was born in Seattle about 1891. Her parents were Frank and Lizzie Firzlaff.

Seattle City Directory, 1890, published by R. L. Polk & Co, page 292

Seattle City Directory, 1890, published by R. L. Polk & Co, page 292

In 1910, Max and Selma were living in Seattle. Max was a bookkeeper for an electrical supplies company.

(Although the information is not certain, it seems that Max’s and Selma’s marriage ended before 1930. Selma later married Charles Hamilton Button, who was the president and general manager of a telephone company. He was born in Michigan on April 19, 1884. Charles and Selma lived in California through the 1960s. Charles died in Orange County, California on March 26, 1968. Selma died in Orange County, California on April 26, 1978. Charles and Selma were buried Westminster Memorial Park in Westminster, Orange County.)

By 1914, Max was in Vancouver. He worked as a tobacconist and cigar dealer until 1917, when he began working as an accountant for Little Brothers, the fur dealers.

He lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1914 to 1918 number 401, 1154 Gilford Street
1919 and 1920 1947 Pendrell Street
1921 and 1922 2046 Beach Avenue
1923 3637 West Third Avenue
1924 number 4, 1473 Nicola Street

After 1924, Max was not in the Vancouver directories.

It appears that Max died in Montreal in 1965, and that he was buried in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal.

Max and Selma had a daughter.

Josephine Alma McKercher

Josephine Alma McKercher was born in Vancouver on September 10, 1913.

In 1930, she was living in Oakland, California, with her mother, Selma, and Selma’s second husband, Charles Hamilton Button.

On January 28, 1934, in Hampton Springs, Florida, Josephine married Robert Tucker Lindsey. He was born in Mississippi, probably on September 7, 1905. His father was William C. Lindsey, who operated the Hampton Springs Hotel and Club in Taylor County, Florida.

In 1940, Robert and Josephine were living in Alameda, California.

Robert and Josephine were divorced in California in October 1968.

Robert died in Orange County, California, on January 23, 1969.

Josephine later lived in San Diego, California. She died in California on October 21, 2002.
