Percy’s Life on the Prairies

Percy attended St. John’s Boys’ School in Winnipeg. When he was 17 he joined the Royal Northwest Mounted Police, where he served for three years.

In 1903 he applied for a grant of homestead land in southeast Alberta.

Percy worked as an accountant for two years in Winnipeg, followed by a period in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

From 1907 to 1910 he was the official auditor for the Province of Saskatchewan.

On December 16, 1908, Percy married Margaret (“Madge”) Eleanor Collier. She was born in Redruth, Cornwall, England about 1882. Her parents were Captain Ebenezer Richard Collier and Margaret Jeffrey Roberts.

Percy died on October 25, 1973. He was buried in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin, Newton County, Missouri.

Regina moved to Hobbs, New Mexico, where her daughter, Joyce, was a school teacher. Regina died in Hobbs on August 23, 1987. She was buried in Ozarks Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bernard Victor Collier Howard

Bernard Victor Collier Howard was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on December 23, 1909. (He sometimes went by the name “Victor Collier Howard.”).

For some time he worked as a writer.

On February 18, 1932, in Vancouver, he married Violet Jane Irving, who was a hairdresser. She was born in Ladysmith, British Columbia, about 1911. Her parents were Thomas Irving and Jane Afflack. (This marriage ended in divorce in Vancouver on July 19, 1938. On September 13, 1940, Violet married Carleton Gross Moore, who was a soldier. He died in Queen Charlotte City, British Columbia, on December 23, 1962.)

In 1945, Bernard travelled to Seattle, Washington. His contact information in Canada was his mother, Margaret E. Howard, who lived at 2366 Marine Drive in West Vancouver.

Richard (“Dick”) Robert Howard

Richard (“Dick”) Robert Howard was born in Vancouver on September 27, 1911.

He worked as a banker.

He married Constance Margaret Dean.

Dick died on August 16, 1978, in Victoria, British Columbia.

Constance died in Victoria on March 31, 2015.

Veronica Joyce Howard

Veronica Joyce Howard was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 14, 1930. (She was often called “Joyce.”)

She became a school teacher, and in 1956 she moved to Hobbs, New Mexico.

In 1962, she married Lawrence Hanford Johnson, who was a lawyer. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on May 30, 1926. His parents were Harry Stainbrook and Florence Wagner Johnson. In 1984, he became a district judge.

Lawrence died on October 6, 2008.

Joyce died in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on October 24, 2010.

James Dolan Howard was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 26, 1934.

In 1956 he married Emma Lee Seaman.

She attended Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove, IL and was a graduate of Branson High School, Branson, MO and Pittsburgh Teachers College in Pittsburgh, KS. She obtained her M.A. in education from UNM. She moved from Branson to Hobbs NM in 1956 and taught in the public schools off and on until her retirement in 1995. She also taught a legendary private kindergarten at the First Presbyterian Church for 12 years. Joyce ended her professional career teaching in the gifted program in Hobbs. Joyce had numerous interests, including gardening, entertaining, listening to jazz, weaving, knitting, reading and traveling. She will best be remembered for her influence on her many students over the years, her loyalty and discretion as a friend and mother, and her wonderful sense of humor. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Johnson, retired district judge from the Fifth Judicial District. She is survived by her daughter, Regina Elise Johnson of Albuquerque; nephew Jamie Howard and wife Natascha; sister-in-law Emmie Seaman; brother James D. Howard; the KnitWits, her beloved weekly knitting group members; and her many other friends in the community of Hobbs and elsewhere. A memorial service and celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Hobbs, Saturday, November 6, 2010.”
