Jopson, James Butcher (1857-1934)

James Butcher Jopson was a contractor, and sometimes a pool and billiard hall operator. He lived at 1180 Denman Street in 1911 and 1912, and at 1216 Denman Street from 1913 to 1916.

He was born on May 27, 1857, in Cambridgeshire, England. His father was James Jopson; his mother was Sophia Bacon.

On December 31, 1885, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, James married Charlotte Ida Judd. She was born on May 1, 1855, in Ireland, possibly in Dublin. Her father was Thomas Frank Judd (1825-1870); her mother was Charlotte Eldred (born about 1833).

James first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1888. He worked at a series of jobs, eventually establishing himself as a building contractor. For some periods, he also operated a series of pool and billiard halls.

James died in Vancouver on August 22, 1934. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Charlotte died in Vancouver, on December 1, 1930. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby,

 

James and Charlotte had the following children.

James Alexander Jopson

James Alexander Jopson was born on May 14, 1886, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. On July 4, 1918, in Vancouver, he married Alma Jack. She was born in Toronto, Ontario on March 24, 1889. Her father was George Jack (1864-1918); her mother was Martha Quinn (1867-1922). The marriage certificate indicated that Alma was divorced. Alma died in Vancouver on December 3, 1943. Further information on James Alexander Jopson is not available at this time.

 

Ernest Edward Jopson

Ernest Edward Jopson was born in Vancouver on November 22, 1887. For a time, he was a salesman; later he operated the Park Service Station at 1701 West Georgia Street. Later he became a bookkeeper for the Lumbermen’s Social Club.

He never married. He died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on December 6, 1958. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Charles Robert Jopson

Charles Robert Jopson was born in Vancouver on October 5, 1889.

He worked in the flooring business, including a periods when he worked laying carpet and setting tiles.

On July 25, 1911, in Vancouver, he married Minnie Katherine Menzies. She was born on January 20, 1889. Her father was Edmund Menzies; her mother was Isabelle McCurdy.

Charles died in Vancouver on December 18, 1960. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Minnie died in Vancouver on July 21, 1961. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Charles and Minnie had a daughter named Joyce R. Jopson, who was born about 1920. She married Mr. W.G. Kelly.

 

Hazel Susan May Jopson

Hazel Susan May Jopson was born in Vancouver on July 12, 1892. She died in Vancouver on August 13, 1897. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Percy Andrew Jopson

Percy Andrew Jopson was born in Vancouver on October 17, 1894.

He worked as an automobile mechanic and as a bartender.

He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

On June 9, 1921, in Vancouver, he married Wilhelmina Violetta Gillam. She was born in Detroit, Michigan about 1901. Her father was Colbane Gillam; her mother was Florence Violetta Dorland.

Percy was a widower when he died in Vancouver on December 8, 1979. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Violet Ada Jopson

Violet Ada Jopson was born in Vancouver on April 24, 1898.

She married William Graham.

Violet died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on March 24, 1976.

 

 

Frederick Arthur Jopson

Frederick Arthur Jopson was born in Vancouver on October 27, 1900.

On June 29, 1918, in Vancouver, Frederick married Mabel Ida Humphrey. She was born in St. John, New Brunswick. Her father was William Albert Humphrey; her mother was Ida Hicks. This marriage ended in divorce.

On February 11, 1928, in Vancouver, Frederick married Jean Baxter (who as also called Jennie). She was born in Edmonton, Alberta on November 26, 1906. Her father was Andrew Baxter; her mother was Christina Buchanan Audsley.

Frederick died in Vancouver on January 24, 1945. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Jean (Jennie) died in Vancouver on May 26, 1976. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

On September 1, 1933, in Vancouver, Frederick’s first wife, Mabel, married William Andrew Wisley. William was a police officer who was originally from Perth, Scotland. William died in Vancouver on January 21, 1966.

Mabel died in Vancouver on May 13, 1981.
