Richard Garnham Harvey was a banker and realtor. He lived at 751 Denman Street from 1905 to 1910.

 

Family Background

Richard Garnham Harvey was born in Victoria, British Columbia, on May 23, 1867. His parents were Rout Harvey (1827-1905) and Susan Jane Oliver (1822-1903).

About 1886, Richard moved to Vancouver, where he became associated with the Bank of British Columbia.

First Marriage

On April 18, 1900, in Vancouver, Richard married Lilian Skene. She was born on July 8, 1875, in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Her parents were William Skene (1842-1915) and Elizabeth Binks (1840-1922).

Richard and Lilian were living in Portland, Oregon in 1900.

The family moved back to British Columbia about 1903. Richard and Charles J. Loewen became partners in a real estate firm in Vancouver.

Richard first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1905.  He lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

In 1910, Richard was one of the provisional directors of Reginald C. Brown Limited, a company that promoted investment in Vancouver.

In 1911, Richard travelled to England, where he praised the investment opportunities that were available in British Columbia.

Automobile Accident

The Harvey family had a 30 horsepower Warren Detroit touring car.

On the afternoon on June 16, 1912, Richard and Lilian, along with their children, Alexander, Gladys, and Reginald, were driving on the “Big Hill” on Ladner Road. When they came to a part of the road that was next to a ravine, the front wheels of the car skidded on some deep sand. The car went over the edge of the ravine, killing Lilian and Reginald.

The coroner’s jury concluded that the dangerous road condition was the cause of the accident.

After the accident, Richard remained in Vancouver.

In 1916 he was the manager of Loewen and Harvey and Preston Ltd., which was a firm of brokers and estate agents.

Richard’s Second Marriage: Eleanor Dalrymple Francis

On October 1, 1920, in Victoria, Richard married Eleanor Dalrymple Warde, who was a widow.

Eleanor was born in England on November 26, 1859 (some sources say 1863). Her parents were Peregrine Madgwick Francis (1818-1878) and Emma Thomas (1829-1890).

 

Eleanor Francis: Family Background

Eleanor’s father, Peregrine Madgwick Francis. served with the British Royal Engineers in India, rising to the rank of colonel.

He later became the manager of the Western Branch of the Bank of England. While he was the manager, the bank acquired over £100,000 in forged bills of exchange. The main fraudsters were George and Austin Bidwell, along with George McDonnell and Edwin Noyes. During the trial that followed, Colonel Francis testified for the prosecution.

The trial led to convictions for all of the accused, who received sentences of life in prison (although they were eventually released).

Peregrine Madgwick Francis died in London, England in 1878.

Emma Francis died at Wimbledon, England, on October 14, 1890.

Richard and Eleanor: After Marriage

After Richard and Eleanor were married, they lived in Vancouver until the mid-1920s.

Richard died in Vancouver on May 26, 1926. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Alexander Rout Harvey was born in Portland, Oregon, on June 20, 1901.

He worked as a broker and real estate salesman.

On October 23, 1925, in Vancouver, he married Edith Sheila Simpson Compton, who was a bookkeeper. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on October 26, 1900. Her parents were Leslie Hamilton Compton and Bessie Florence Neville.

Edith died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 7, 1970.

Alexander died in Kelowna, British Columbia, on March 9, 1979.

At the time of Alexander’s death, he was married to Frances Mary Tolson. She was born in Victoria, British Columbia, on March 5, 1897. Her parents were Charles William Tolson and Evelyn Grace Wilson. On June 30, 1921, in Victoria, Frances married Douglas Meredith Layton, who worked at the meteorological observatory. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, on April 12, 1897. His parents were Jack B. Layton and Mary R. Russell. Douglas died in Kelowna on October 5, 1971.

Alexander and Edith had a daughter.

Sheila Ann Rout Harvey was often called “Ann.” In 1952 she graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

“A pioneer banker and business man of British Columbia passed away at 5 a.m. in the person of Richard G. Harvey, who died at his home, 1619 Barclay street, after a short illness. He was a director of the firm of Loewen, Harvey & Preston Limited.

Born in Victoria fifty-nine years ago, Mr. Harvey came to Vancouver in 1886 when the Bank of British Columbia was organized. He was prominent in the employ of that institution and for a number of years represented it in Portland.

In 1903 he returned to Victoria and entered partnership with Charles J. Loewen & Harvey. Since that time he has resided in this city and played an important part in the development of many districts.

Mr. Harvey was formerly a member of the Jericho Country Club and also of Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club, but in recent years had dropped these affiliations. He was a staunch supporter of Christ Church.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 3 p.m. at Christ Church. Archdeacon Heathcote will officiate and will be assisted by Rev. C.B. Price. Interment will be in the family plot at Mountain View Cemetery. The deceased is survived by his wife, one daughter, Gladys, at home, and A. Rout Harvey, North Vancouver.”
