William’s sons, George and William Jr., may have been in the same house in 1891 (listed as Park Road). William may have been rooming at Ontario House (402 Pender Street) in 1891.

Although it is not certain, it appears that there was only one house in the area of Chilco Street and Park Road in the late 1880s and early 1890s. This is the house that later became the Stanley Park Brewery.

Charles was born in New Westminster on September 12, 1864. His parents were Philip Sullivan (1817-1886) and Josephine (last name possibly Bassette) (1819-1894). Philip Sullivan died at Granville (which was later part of Vancouver) on February 25, 1886.

On September 2, 1909, in Vancouver, Amy married Joseph Mackay, who was a bookkeeper. He was born in Woodford, Essex, England on January 18, 1869. His parents were Peter Mackay and Jane Brown.

Joseph had worked as the circulation manager for the Vancouver News-Advertiser. He later became a financial official in the provincial forestry department.

Amy died in Vancouver on November 30, 1938. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Joseph died in Vancouver on June 9, 1945. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Nancy Joyce Mackay

Joseph Mackay and Amy Lillian Wood had a daughter, Nancy Joyce Mackay. She was actually Nancy Joyce Brianne Tweedale, who was born in England on November 21, 1908.

Nancy’s parents were Bernard Tweedale (1878-1933) and Dorothy Talbot Warren (1887–1952). Bernard Tweedale was a brother of Cyril Tweedale, who was married to Amy’s sister, Clara. Bernard and Dorothy were divorced in Vancouver on June 23, 1916. Bernard moved to California and re-married. Dorothy did not re-marry. She died in Vancouver on April 23, 1952.

It appears that Joseph and Amy Mackay raised Nancy, and they may have adopted her as well.

Nancy did not marry. She died in Vancouver on March 14, 1968.

 

Florence Wood

Florence Wood was born in England on September 24, probably in 1870.

On June 21, 1890, in Vancouver, she married George Alfred Owens, who was an expressman. He was born in Dover, Kent on November 22, 1852 (or 1854). His parents were John (or George) Owens and Marie Charlotte (or Charlotte Augusta) LeTourneau.

George worked as a naval surveyor. He died in Vancouver on May 29, 1943. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

William Henry Wood was born in Chesterfield, England, on March 19, 1872.

He worked as a bookkeeper on the Vancouver News-Advertiser.

On June 25, 1896, in Vancouver, he married Esther Giffen. She was born in Collingwood, Ontario on February 19, 1872. Her parents were Andrew Carr Giffen and Esther Mary Henning.

From 1899 to 1903, William was a Vancouver alderman in Ward Five.

On December 24, 1915, in Vancouver, he signed his attestation papers to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He was discharged on November 26, 1918, after he was found medically unfit for further service because he was “over age.”

He was the secretary of the Burnaby School Board until he retired about 1934.

He died in Vancouver on October 12, 1947. He was buried in Fraser Cemetery in New Westminster, British Columbia.

Esther died in Vancouver on September 19, 1954. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Emily Annie Wood

Emily Annie Wood was born in Scarborough, England on May 14, 1874.

On December 21, 1901, in Vancouver, She married Wolfstan Rudolf Blind, who was a bookkeeper. He was born in London, England in January 1874. His parents were Rudolph Blind (1850–1916) and Anne “Annie” Sarah Parsone (1850–1926).

Rudolf Blind was a son of Karl Blind (1826-1907) a German writer and revolutionary advocate. Rudolf became a recognized artist in England. He died on February 3, 1916.

He later had some success as a horse owner and trainer.

“Joseph MacKay, 76, 725 Jervis, one of the best known former officials of the provincial forestry department, died Saturday. His funeral will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. from Center and Hanna’s with committal at Forest Lawn, Rev. G.F. Gower officiating.

Mr. MacKay came to Vancouver from England more than 50 years ago and in 1895 was circulation manager for the News-Advertiser, a morning paper owned by the late F.L. Carter-Cotton.

Mr. MacKay then joined the forestry department and for three decades was principal financial official in the Vancouver office where he was well-known to hundreds of people in the industry. He retired a few years ago.

He was married to Lily Wood, a sister of former alderman W. H. Wood, member of a pioneer family of Mount Pleasant. His wife predeceased him some years ago.”

Mr. Owens was a pioneer Vancouver resident, having resided here since 1888. He left his native England as a young man and came West with the B.C.-Alberta survey party. He fought against the rebels in the second Riel Rebellion. He retired from business 40 years ago.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, Fred A. and Louis A., in Vancouver; three daughters, Mrs. C.D. Barker, Premier; Mrs. E.L. Purdy, Kamloops; Mrs. A.C. Judd, in Vancouver, and six grandchildren.

“Funeral services will be held Monday for Mrs. Clara Tweedale, member of a pioneer Vancouver family who died in General Hospital Wednesday.

She was born in Scarborough, England, and as a child came to the city with her parents in the early days of the CPR.

Until recently she was active in golf, riding and musical circles. She was a life member of the Red Cross for services she rendered during World War One.

Mrs. Tweedale was the widow of Capt. Cyril Tweedale, veteran of the fort Garry Horse.

She is survived by one son, Dudley, and two daughters, Phyllis at home and Mrs. Esme Clarke of North Vancouver; a sister, Mrs. W.R. Blind of Victoria, and four grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. from Nunn & Thomson Chapel with Rev. A.M. Trendell officiating.”

“Captain Cyril Tweedale, 57, of 4588 Angus drive, who was widely known in Vancouver real estate and business circles for more than thirty years, died suddenly this morning in Shaughnessy Military Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. from Nunn & Thomson funeral Chapel, Rev. W.T. Keeling officiating. Arthur J. English, Dr. G.F. Stron, J.P. Hicolls, H.R. Budd, Vans Macdonald and G.H. Gowan will be pallbearers.

With a distinguished war record and a long career in the building of Vancouver, the late Captain Tweedale had a host of friends among all classes in the city, especially among members of the Board of Trade and Real Estate Exchange.

Native of England

He was born in Lancashire, and came to Canada in 1903 with the Barr Colony. He took up a homestead at Lloydminster, Sask., and farmed for two years, before coming to Vancouver to join the pioneer real estate firm of Richards & Ackroyd in 1905.

Later he organized the London & Western Canada Investment Co. On the outbreak of war he was appointed intelligence officer in Vancouver and soon went overseas as officer commanding the troops aboard the Empress of Japan. Later he served with the Fort Garry Horse.

Real Estate Man

After the war he joined the staff of London & British North America Co. as manager of the real estate department, and in 1928 he accepted a position with the Royal Trust Co., which he occupied up to the time of his death.

Captain Tweedale is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Lionel Clarke and Miss Phyllis Tweedale; one son, Cyril, of Pioneer; and one sister in Australia.”
