Family Background

Benjamin Willson was born at St. John’s, Middlesex County, Ontario on April 17, 1844. His parents were Crowell Willson (1815–1894) and Maria Louisa Jackson (1811–1885).

Crowell Willson was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1851 and 1863. He was elected to the federal House of Commons in 1867 and in 1874.

Early Life in Ontario

After Benjamin finished his education, he worked in his father’s woollen mill in St. John’s.

In the 1860s he became a member of a volunteer military company.

On November 10, 1870, in London Township, Middlesex County, he married Emily Anne Kent. She was born in London, Ontario about 1846. Her parents were Sextus Kent (1821-1895) and Martha Cunningham Clarke (1823-1915).

In 1871, he moved to Wingham, Ontario, where he became a partner with Edwin Kent in a general store.

In the early 1870s, Benjamin was the reeve of the local municipality (similar to the position of mayor). He later became the reeve of Wingham while it was an incorporated village, and the mayor of Wingham when it became a town in 1878.

In 1875, Benjamin and his brother, Robert Hiram Willson (1851-1878) opened a private bank in Wingham.

Montreal Gazette, June 17, 1878, page 3, column 2.

Benjamin’s wife, Emily, died in Wingham on May 15, 1882.

When the Bank of Hamilton opened a branch in Wingham, in 1882, Benjamin became the manager.

In 1889, Benjamin and his father went on a long trip to western North America.

Victoria Daily Times, July 22, 1889, page 1, column 8.

In the 1891 Canada census, Benjamin was a bank manager, living in Wingham with his sons, Crowell and Robert. Benjamin’s sister, Mary, was also living with the family.

In the early 1890s, the Bank of Hamilton moved into a new branch building in Wingham.
