Burns, John (Junior) (1861-1952)

John Burns (Junior) was a hardware merchant. He lived at 1821 Barclay Street from 1902 to 1912.

John Burns, Jr., was born in Toronto, Ontario on June 8, 1861. His father was John Burns (born about 1834 in Ontario); his mother was Margaret Lumsden (or Lumsdon) Dow (born about 1839 in Ontario).

He married Grace Lyon. She was born in Ontario on November 1, 1862. Her father was Robert Adam Lyon (c. 1829-1901), a merchant, lumberman and politician; her mother was Sarah Elizabeth Moore (1835-1911).

After being for some time in Winnipeg, he came to Vancouver in early 1891. In November 1891, he was living at 804 Hornby Street. By 1894, he had set up a business at 14 Cordova Street as a manufacturers agent, and he was living at 1216 Robson Street. One of his early apprentices was Peter Paterson, who later started his own successful hardware business in Vancouver.

From 1902 to 1912, John and Grace lived at 1821 Barclay Street.

In 1913, John and Grace moved to Shaughnessy Heights, at the intersection of Angus Drive and The Crescent (1403 Angus Drive). They were still living there when Grace died on May 30, 1949. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

John died on May 8, 1952; he was also buried in Ocean View Burial Park.

John and Grace had one son

John Lyon Burns

John Lyon Burns was born in Vancouver on November 1891. He went to Upper Canada College, and was later a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity at the University of Toronto.

On October 18, 1916, in Toronto, Ontario, John Lyon burns married Dorothy Wincham Massey. She was born in Toronto on December 17, 1889. Her father was John Massey; her mother was Kate Robinson.

Dorothy died in Vancouver on May 31, 1967.

John later married Margaret Dorothy Birch. She was still living when John died in Vancouver on April 17, 1980.

In 1891 he came to Vancouver and was active as a hardware manufacturer’s agent until his retirement 10 years ago. He was a member of the Vancouver Club.
