Family Background

Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski (sometimes called “Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski, Jr.” or “Stan”) was born in Toronto, Ontario, on May 1, 1876. Harold Northey Gzowski was born in Toronto on March 9, 1882.

Their grandfather was Sir Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski (1813-1898), a well-known Polish-Canadian engineer who built railways, bridges and other large projects.

Stan’s and Harold’s parents were Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski (1847-1922) and Mary Elizabeth Bell (1856-1913).

Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski Jr. (“Stan”)

Stan went to Bishop Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ontario, and the School of Practical Science in Toronto (later known as the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto).

In 1896 he began his career as a railway surveyor. He worked on railway surveying and construction in western Canada. In 1905 he joined Foss, Macdonell and Company, an engineering and contracting firm. In 1906 the firm became Macdonell, Gzowski and Company.

One of the firm’s notable projects was the Canadian Pacific Railway’s spiral tunnels, which replaced the “Big Hill” portion of the railway line in the Kicking Horse Pass.

Mildred had been married before, to Charles Colebrook Patterson, the son of a former lieutenant-governor of Manitoba, but that marriage ended in divorce.

Barbara Yvonne Gzowski was born in Montreal on November 26, 1919.

On January 12, 1942, in Montreal, she married Orlando Harold Warwick (known as “Harold”), who was a physician and professor. He was born in St. John, New Brunswick in 1915.

Edith Gzowski was born in Montreal on January 22, 1924.

She never married. She died in Montreal on May 12, 1993.

Harold Northey Gzowski

Harold Northey Gzowski was born in Toronto on April 9, 1882. He graduated from the University of Toronto’ s faculty of applied science in 1903.

On June 21, 1910, in Toronto, Harold married Vera McCarthy Morgan. Her parents were Edward Morgan, a lawyer and judge in Ontario, and Clara McCarthy.

Harold Edward Gzowski was born in Toronto on February 12, 1911.

On May 12, 1932, in Niagara County, New York, he married Margaret McGregor Young. She was born in Toronto on November 17, 1910. Her parents were McGregor Young and Maud Williams. (One biography of Peter Gzowski says that Harold and Margaret were married in Toronto in May 1932, but this appears to be inaccurate.)

Harold and Margaret were married for only a short time.

Margaret later married Reginald Walker Brown, who was the sales manager at a textile mill, and they moved to Galt, Ontario. Margaret died about 1940.

Reginald died in Galt on August 9, 1970.
