William Henry Gallagher was a real estate broker. He lived at 1935 Comox Street from 1909 to 1942.

William Henry Gallagher was born in Adjala, Ontario, on September 12, 1862 (some sources say 1863 or 1864). His father was Robert Gallagher (1831-1903), who was a farmer. William’s mother was Lucinda Sommerville (1837-1903).

William went to public school in Toronto, Ontario. He later took a commercial course at Wells’ Business College in Toronto. (Later advertising for the college said that it was established in 1884, which appears to be a year or two after William would have been a student there.)

William then apprenticed in Toronto to become a carpenter and house builder.

In 1883 he was a builder in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and in Wolseley and Regina in the Northwest Territories (later Saskatchewan). He stayed in Regina until 1886.

In the spring of 1886, he moved to Granville, British Columbia, which became the City of Vancouver later that year. He was present at the first meeting of Vancouver’s first city council.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1888. He was a carpenter and building contractor.

He lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1888 Westminster Avenue (unnumbered)
1889 434 Seymour Street
1890 516 Oppenheimer Street
1891 334 Hastings Street
1892 324 Powell Street
1894 324 Powell Street (listed as W H Galley)
1896 to 1899 814 Richards Street
1900 to 1902 not listed under Vancouver names
1903 869 Seymour Street (listed as 869 Westminster Avenue under names)
1904 to 1908 869 Seymour Street
1909 to 1942 1935 Comox Street

In 1889, William appeared in a photograph with several other people. The house number above the door is 434; William lived at 434 Seymour Street around that time, so the house may be 434 Seymour Street.

In 1895 he became an alderman on the Vancouver City Council. (Some sources suggest, incorrectly, that it was 1896 or 1897.)

He remained in the contracting business until 1896. The Vancouver directories say that he was a miner from 1897 to 1900. By the time of the 1901 Canada census, he was as real estate and financial broker.

On February 19, 1900, in Nassagaweya Township, near Milton, Ontario, William married Esther Milena Chapman. She was born in Nassagaweya on March 9, 1873. Her father was Ephraim Chapman (1840-1922). Her mother was Sarah Jane Abrey (1845-1913).

William and Esther lived at 869 Seymour Street in Vancouver until 1908. In 1909 they moved to 1935 Comox Street.

William and Esther were still living together in 1921. However, by 1925, Esther was living at 1343 Lakewood Drive. William and Esther were divorced sometime before 1933.

William continued to live at 1935 Comox Street until he died on July 11, 1942. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Esther’s Later Life

On October 16, 1933, in Vancouver, Esther married James Maurice Shepley, who was a widowed road-building contractor. He was born on April 6, 1872, in Kent County, Ontario. His father was Nelson Harmon Shipley. His mother was Lydia Ann Jenner.

James died on December 7, 1936, near Rosedale, which is east of Chilliwack, British Columbia. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Esther died on April 13, 1957, in Vancouver. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

William and Esther did not have any children.

William Gallagher’s Real Estate Office

For many years, William had his real estate offices at 448 Pender Street, which was at the southeast corner of Pender Street and Richards Street.

In December 1955, the new owners decided to demolish the building and to use the property for a car park.

“One of the few remaining wooden buildings in the downtown area that dates back to the Vancouver fire of 1886, is under the demolition hammer this week at Pender and Richards.

Being razed is the original home of the W.H. Gallagher & Co. real estate office, 448 Pender, built when the now busy intersection was nothing but bush land.

The building and location was purchased two months ago by Nelson Bracken Properties Ltd., and shortly after the new year will be transformed into a 30-car parking lot operated by Rite Park Ltd.

According to W.H. Gallagher, nephew of the pioneer city realtor, the famous old landmark was also the home of the Busy-B Bookshop for more than 35 years, and housed the late David Willington, barber shop for many years.”
