Carroll, Benjamin (1853-1925)

Benjamin Carroll was a carpenter who lived at 1862 Beach Avenue from 1904 to 1905.

He was born on January 26, 1853, probably in St. Catharines, Ontario. His parents were Peter and Nancy Carroll. It appears that his father was born in Ireland, and that his mother was born in New Brunswick.

On November 8, 1877, in St. Catharines, he married Aurillia (“Lily”) Penelope Tewsley. She was born in Ontario on February 5, 1856. Her parents were James Tewsley (1833-1908) and Elizabeth Gardiner Tummey (1837-1907).

Benjamin and Lily lived in St. Catharines until 1901. By 1902, Benjamin had moved to Vancouver; he was working as a carpenter, and was living at Fernwood cottage in the 1700 block of Beach Avenue. By 1903, he was at 1751 Beach Avenue (which was possibly the same residence where he had lived in 1902).

In 1904 and 1905, he was at 1862 Beach Avenue. He did not appear in the Vancouver directories again until 1911; he was rooming at the Mason Block, which was at 2603 Main Street.

According to the 1911 Canada Census, Lily was living in Merritton, Ontario. She described herself as married, although it appears that Benjamin was not living with her. By 1915, Lily had moved from Merritton to Guelph, Ontario. For some time she was living at 162 Cardigan Street in Guelph.

According to the 1921 Canada census, Benjamin was still married; he was working as a carpenter and rooming at Amos Newton’s house at 471 18th East Avenue in Vancouver. Also in the 1921 Canada census, Lily was living at 8 Vine Street in St Catharines; the census described her as a widow.

Sometime about mid-1923, Benjamin became a patient at the Provincial Home for Incurables, which was at the northeast corner of Hudson Street and Marine Drive.

Benjamin died at the Provincial Home for Incurables on September 6, 1925. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Lily died in St Catharines on February 21, 1931. She was buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines.

Florence Carroll

Florence Carroll was born in Ontario on December 15, 1879.

On January 10, 1906, in Fonthill, Ontario, she married Hyliard Stitzinger. He was born about 1879. His father was John Stitzinger; his mother was M.C. Hausler.

 

 

Louise (or Louisa) Carroll

Louise (or Louisa) Carroll was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, on December 6, 1881. On May 6, 1902, in St. Catharines, she married Archibald Wetherald Boles, who was an electrical worker. He was born about 1881. His father was James Boles; his mother was Charlotte Lambert.

 

 

Maud Carroll

Maud Carroll was born in Ontario on February 23, 1884.

 

 

Archibald Benson Carroll

Archibald Benson Carroll was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, on December 2, 1889.

Archibald served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. His war records described his mother, Mrs. Benjamin Carroll, as a widow, who was receiving regular payments from Archibald’s military pay.

It appears that Archibald married Nellie Bailey, who was born in 1899. Archibald died in 1947. He was buried in St. David’s Anglican Church Cemetery in Everett, Ontario. Nellie died in 1984, and was buried in St. David’s Anglican Church Cemetery.

Eliza Carroll was born in Ontario on January 23, 1892.
