Allan Brothers – Henderson’s City of Vancouver and North Vancouver Directory – 1910 – Part 1 – page 77

Thomas Allan was a farmer and lumberman. He was sometimes involved in real estate. He lived at 1872 Barclay Street from 1910 to 1914.

Thomas Allan was born in Burgess, Lanark County, Ontario, on February 10 (or 11), 1846 (or 1845). His father was John Allan; his mother was Ann Maclean.

On February 13, 1871, in Renfrew, Ontario, Thomas married Sarah Dodd. She was born in Scotland on March 22, 1850 (or 1851). Her father was Thomas Dodd; her mother was Elizabeth Mcleod.

He arrived in Vancouver about 1888, and stayed in the Vancouver area until he died in North Vancouver on April 24, 1925. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Sarah died in Vancouver on January 20, 1928. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

 

Thomas and Sarah had the following children.

 

Thomas Alfred Allan (son of Thomas Allan)

Thomas Alfred Allan was born on November 19, 1871 (or 1872), in Ontario. On November 24, 1897, he married Gea Randine Saugstad. She was born in Polk County, Minnesota on February 12, 1879. Her father was Christian Saugstad (1837-1897); her mother was Gunnhild Marie Myhr.(1859-1937). Christian Saugstad was a Lutheran minister. In 1894, he led a group of Norwegian-American farmers to build a community on the fjord at Bella Coola.

Thomas died on September 1, 1939, in North Vancouver, British Columbia.

Gea died in Vancouver on April 16, 1947.

 

John George (Jack) Allan (son of Thomas Allan)

John George (Jack) Allan was born on January 25, 1873 in Elmsley, Ontario. He was a teamster and mining broker.

It appears that he married Eva Maude Wilhelm (née Tudhope) in Victoria, British Columbia, on September 4, 1907. Eva was born about 1882 in Cornwall, Ontario. Her parents were Edwin and Clara Tudhope. Eva had been married before, but she was divorced sometime before her marriage to Jack.

Jack died in Vancouver on February 15, 1943. His death certificate indicates that he was single.

 

Edward Francis Allan (son of Thomas Allan)

Edward Francis Allan was born in Ontario in July 1875 (or 1876). On December 29, 1909, in Vancouver, he married Pearle Maria McConnell. She was born on October 18, 1866, in Walkerville, Ontario. Her father was David McConnell; her mother was: Mary Dorcas Pollock.

Pearle died in Vancouver on January 30, 1932.

Edward died in Essondale, British Columbia, on September 16, 1953.

 

Agnes Jessie Allan (daughter of Thomas Allan)

Agnes Jessie Allan was born in Perth, Ontario, on June 3, 1876. On September 2, 1903, in Vancouver, she married William Herchmer Rose. He was born on October 14, 1869 in Morrisburg, Ontario. His parents were Isaac Newton Rose and Ruth Rose. [Donald Greenfield Macdonell, of 1906 Nelson Street from 1906 to 1916, was married to Edith Rose, who was the fourth daughter of Isaac N. Rose.]

William died in Vancouver on July 19, 1927. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Agnes died in Vancouver on April 29, 1952.She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

 

Joseph Dodd Allan (son of Thomas Allan)

Joseph Dodd Allan was born in Perth, Ontario, on October 20, 1879. He lived at 1860 Comox Street from 1911 to 1914. He was a real estate broker. He was also interested in photography, and took photographs of the gold rush

On February 20, 1904, he married Florence Arkle. She was born on September 13, 1879, in Sunderland, England.

Florence died on February 12, 1947, in Vancouver.

Joseph later married Ella Eleanor Niebergall. She was born on October 29, 1883, in Phillipsburg, Ontario. Her father was John Niebergall; her mother was Lydia Lohn.

Joseph died in Vancouver on July 10, 1960.

Ella died in Vancouver on January 19, 1966.

 

Alexander Gray Allan (son of Thomas Allan)

Alexander Gray Allan was born on October 1, 1879 (or 1880) in Perth, Ontario. On June 10, 1907, in Vancouver, he married Isabella Taylor Allan. She was born on April 20, 1885, in Glasgow, Scotland.

Alexander died in Vancouver on September22, 1943.

Isabella died in Vancouver on October 28, 1965.

 

Ann Maud Allan (daughter of Thomas Allan)

Ann Maud Allan was born in Smith’s Falls, Ontario, on March 10, 1881 (or 1882). On June 25, 1913, in Vancouver, she married Milford Solon Hastings. He was born on November 19, 1882.

Milford died in Vancouver on October 6, 1954.

Ann died on January 24, 1971 in Vancouver.

 

Elizabeth (“Betty”) Dodd Allan (daughter of Thomas Allan)

Elizabeth Dodd Allan was born on January 31, 1884 (or 1883) in Ontario.

In 1918, in Brentford district, Middlesex, England, she married Basil Dunnell. He was born on March 8, 1885, in Fulham, London, England. His father was George Robert Dunell (1847-1907), who was an engineer and writer; his mother was Catherine Robinson Thompson.

By 1920, Basil was living at 1835 Pendrell Street, where he stayed until about 1925. He later lived in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Basil died in Vancouver on March 14, 1977. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Elizabeth died in Vancouver on January 13, 1960. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Basil and Elizabeth had at least one child: Basil Anderson Dunell (1923-2005) went to Princeton University, where he graduated with a degree in chemistry in 1949.

The Vancouver directories show a Thomas “Holland” at 1872 Barclay Street in 1912, but this appears to be an error. There is also a “Miss Allan” at 1872 Barclay Street in 1913: this appears to be Ann Maud Allan, who did not marry until mid-1913.)

Mr. Allan, 82, of 1998 West Forty-fifth died Sunday. He sold property on the west shore when waterfront lots at West Bay sold for only a few hundred dollars and sold property in Lynn Valley in 1910 when the going price was $500 for an acre. A native of Perth, Ont., Mr. Allan came to Vancouver in 1887. He took pictures of the gold rush for a photographic equipment shop on Hastings St. In 1905, with his two brothers, Mr. Allan formed Allan Brothers real estate. He later went into partnership with Boultbee and Company, which was subsequently merged with Macaulay, Nicolls, Maitland & Co. Ltd. Family: his wife Ella at home; two sons Dalton and Eric, both of Vancouver, one daughter, Mrs. Herber Cutler of Stewkley, Busck, Engl and six grandchildren.
