Reid, Lestock Blair (1885-1954)

Lestock Blair Reid was an accountant with the City of Vancouver Water Works Department. He lived at 1047 Denman Street in 1913 and 1914.

Lestock Blair Reid was born on March 1, 1885, in Portsmouth, England. His father was Lestock Holland Reid (1844-1914), who was a medical doctor. His mother was Julia Margaret Lowder (1845-after 1914).

Lestock Holland Reid and the rest of the family lived in England until 1891, when they moved to Bowmanville, Ontario.

By 1911, Lestock was living in Vancouver. He was working as a clerk for the City of Vancouver.

On August 2, 1911, in Vancouver, Lestock married Muriel Chillingworth Colls. She was a governess for the family of Frederick James Procter, who lived at 1846 Haro Street.

Muriel was born on March 20, 1884, in Tunbridge Wells, England. Her father was Benjamin John Chillingworth Colls (1848-1901), who was a tailor. Muriel’s mother was Mary Louisa Payne (1847-1920).

Lestock enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

He worked as an accountant for the City of Vancouver until about 1949.

Lestock and Muriel lived in the Vancouver area until the 1950s.

Lestock died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on January 26, 1954.

Muriel died in West Vancouver, British Columbia, on April 1, 1989, at the age of 105.

Lestock and Muriel had the following children.

 

Cicely Barbara Reid

Cicely Barbara Reid was born in Vancouver on May 23, 1912. She went to the University of British Columbia, and trained as a teacher.

On November 8, 1939, in West Vancouver, she married Jeremiah (“Jerry”) Cornelius Buckley, who was a cattle rancher. He was born on July 15, 1900, in Donoughmore, County, Cork, Ireland. His father was Cornelius Jeremiah Buckley. His mother was Hannah Sexton.

Jeremiah died in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on March 30, 1975. He was buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery.

Barbara died on April 26, 2011.

Jeremiah and Barbara had two children: Con and Sheila.

 

Mary Diana Reid

Mary Diana Reid was born in Vancouver on July 15, 1917. She was sometimes called Diana, “Pixie” or “Pix.”

On January 14, 1939, in Vancouver, she married John Heywood Daly, who was a fisherman. He was born in Vancouver in on October 31, 1912. His father was John Joseph Heywood Daly. His mother was Muriel Sidney Broadbent. This marriage ended in divorce in Vancouver on June 25, 1954.

Diana did not re-marry. She died in Sechelt, British Columbia, on October 26, 2010.

John was married again in 1974, to Edith Iglauer, who was a well-known American writer. (It was Edith’s second marriage as well.) After John died in 1978, Edith wrote a book called “Fishing with John,” which described their years together. John Daly Nature Park, on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, is named after John. Edith later married Franklin White (1914-2015.)

John and Diana had two sons: Sean and Richard.
