“Pioneer Physician Dies in Hospital; Dr. Lachlan N. MacKechnie Passed Away Late Saturday Night,” Vancouver Province, October 4, 1926, page 3:

“Following an illness of a year which for the past two months confined him to bed at St. Paul’s Hospital, Dr. Lachlan Neil MacKechnie died on Saturday midnight.

Dr. Mackechnie was well known as a leading physician in British Columbia for the past thirty-five years. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

Born at Paisley, Ont., August 19, 1864, he graduated in medicine from Toronto University. Coming to British Columbia in 1892 he located at Victoria, where he practised his profession. In 1895 he removed to Vancouver, where his abilities soon won for him a large practice. He specialized in ear and eye ailments.

Realty early attracted the attention of Dr. MacKechnie and he invested successfully in Vancouver properties. His private interests became so extensive as to require his whole attention and for a time he retired from the pursuit of his profession. Of late years he again took up medicine and once more built up a large practice.

Dr. Mackechnie was for twenty years a deacon in First Baptist Church and was active in all the enterprises of the church, aiding generously in the building of the handsome Nelson street edifice.

Besides his wife, his immediate family consists of his daughter Flora and Margaret, the former a nurse at Vancouver General Hospital, the latter at home, one son, Hugh, a medical student. Mrs. E.A. Cleveland, Glencoe Lodge, is a sister. He also is survived by a brother, a Chicago physician.

The funeral will take place from the First Baptist church on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Ref. J.J. Ross officiating.”

“Names His Own Pallbearers for Funeral,” Vancouver Sun, October 4, 1926, page 2:

“Funeral services for the late Dr. L.N. Mackechnie, pioneer resident and one of the best known medical men in this province, who died shortly after midnight Saturday will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist church.

Pallbearers will be intimate friends of the family, all of them having been named by Dr. MacKechnie before his death, when he also made other arrangements for his funeral.

A resident of this province for 32 years, Dr. MacKechnie was a graduate of Toronto University and first located in Victoria, remaining there about a year, when he moved to Vancouver. For several years he specialized in eye and ear study.

He was a prominent member of the First Baptist church, of which he was deacon for more than 20 years. Always keenly interested in the welfare of the church, he was one of the leading figures behind the construction of the edifice which now stands on the corner of Burrard and Nelson streets.

The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. J.J. Ross, pastor of the church, and the remains will lie in state for two hours at the church prior to the services.”
