Sykes, Alfred D’Oyley (1872-1954)

Alfred D’Oyley Sykes was an accountant who lived at 2060 Beach Avenue in 1906.

Alfred D’Oyley Sykes was born on July 6, 1872, in the village of Haselor, about nine kilometres west of Stratford-upon-Avon. His father was Rev. John Heath Sykes (1834-1912), an Anglican church clergyman who served for many years in Haselor.

Alfred’s mother was Frances Amelia Nind (1862-1919). She was the daughter of Philip Henry Nind, who was an Anglican clergyman.

Alfred travelled to Canada in the 1890s. In 1898 he appeared on the list of voters in the Revelstoke riding of British Columbia. He was living at Fire Valley (also called Inonoaklin Valley).

By 1899 he was working for the Yale-Columbia Lumber Company in Rossland, British Columbia.

Alfred took part in Rossland’s local sporting and recreational events, including tennis and billiards.

The Yale-Columbia Lumber Co. was a successor to the Genelle Brothers Lumber Co., which was a successful lumbering business in the Kootenay area of British Columbia. The company had a series of sawmills in several British Columbia locations, including Nakusp, Nelson, and Westley, and Cascade (sometimes called Billings).

One of the Genelle daughters was Scenie (who sometimes went by many other names, including Sadie, Celia, and, most often, Lucy). She was born in Ontario on December 2, 1876. Her father was Pierre (“Peter”) Genelle (born about 1824). Her mother was Marie (“Mary”) Parisie (1833-1919).

Alfred and Lucy were married in Rossland, British Columbia, on March 3, 1903.

By 1904, Alfred was working for the Hastings Shingle Manufacturing Company in Vancouver.

Later, Alfred worked as an accountant, sometimes for other businesses and sometimes on his own. For a short time before the First World War he was a financial broker.

The Sykes family lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1904 120 East Dufferin Street.
1905 134 East Dufferin Street
1906 2060 Beach Avenue
1909 and 1910 2916 Manitoba Street
1911 and 1912 2287 West Eighth Avenue
1913 218 East 11th Avenue
1914 125 East 12th Avenue
1915 to 1917 256 East 12th Avenue
1918 to 1926 228 East 11th Avenue

Alfred enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. After the war, he resumed his accounting work in Vancouver.

Alfred’s and Lucy’s marriage ended in divorce, probably in the 1920s. About 1926, Lucy moved to Los Angeles, California, along with the family’s daughters, Marcedesse and Gwendolyn (who was sometimes called “Brownie”).

Alfred remained in Vancouver. He did not re-marry.

In 1930, Lucy was in Los Angeles, along with Marcedesse and Gwendolyn.

In 1940, Lucy was in Portsmouth City, New Hampshire, along with Gwendolyn and Gwendolyn’s husband, George Michael Holley.

Lucy died in Los Angeles on June 30, 1950.

Alfred died in Vancouver on July 2, 1954.

Alfred and Lucy had two daughters.

Marcedesse Frances Doyley Sykes

Marcedesse Frances Doyley Sykes was born in Vancouver on August 18, 1904.

She studied the piano and participated in recitals in Vancouver, along with her sister, Brownie, and other music pupils.

In 1925, she was living at 288 East 11th Avenue, and she was working as a telephone operator.

About 1926, she moved to California. In 1928 she was working as a stenographer, and living at 3668 Arlington Avenue in Los Angeles, along with her sister, Gwendolyn.

On June 2, 1934, in Los Angeles, she married Roger Alston Jones, who was a widowed lawyer. He was born on September 26, 1893, in Montgomery, Alabama. His father was George Washington Jones (1865-1930). His mother was Ruth Norton. Roger had served with the United States Army during the First World War.

On November 18, 1938, Marcedesse became a naturalized United States citizen.

It appears that Roger’s and Marcedesse’s marriage ended in the 1940s. Roger died in Los Angeles on January 15, 1973.

In 1947, Marcedesse married Brock Robards Darling. He was born on September 24, 1899, in Sherman, California.

Brock and Marcedesse lived in Santa Monica, Calif., for many years.

Marcedesse also lived in Boston, Massachusetts and Guadalajara, Mexico. She moved to Eugene, Oregon, in the 1970s.

Brock died in Los Angeles on April 23, 1983.

Marcedesse died in Eugene on February 7, 2004.

Roger Jones and Marcedesse had a son, George Sykes Jones, who was born in Los Angeles on July 2, 1935. In 2008 he was living in Eugene, Oregon.

Gwendolyn Doylie (“Brownie”) Sykes

Gwendolyn Doylie (“Brownie”) Sykes was born in Vancouver on August 30, 1906.

Like her sister, she studied the piano and participated in recitals in Vancouver.

In 1926, she was living at 288 East 11th Avenue, and she was working as a comptomer operator.

About 1926, she moved to California. In 1928 she became a naturalized United States citizen.

In 1928 she was working as a clerk and living at 3668 Arlington Avenue in Los Angeles, along with her sister, Marcedesse.

In 1930 she was living in Los Angeles, along with her mother and her sister, Marcedesse.

On April 9, 1932, in Los Angeles, she married George Michael Holley, Junior, who was an ensign with the United States Navy. He was born in Independent City, Virginia, on August 10, 1908. His father was George Michael Holley, Senior. His mother was Lena (or Leila) Dobbyns.

George Michael Holley, Junior, had attended the United States Naval Academy.

In the mid-1930s, George was serving with the navy in Hawaii; Gwendolyn spent some time in Hawaii, as well.

In 1940, George and Gwendolyn were in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, along with Gwendolyn’s mother, Lucy.

George was a captain in the navy during the Second World War and the Korean War. He received a Bronze Star medal.

It appears that George was married at some time to Cynthia Marjorie Mee (1916-2008).

George died on March 7, 1974. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia.

Gwendolyn died in Lane County, Oregon (probably in Eugene), on March 19, 1990.

George Michael Holley; Lucky Bag, First Class, United States Naval Academy, 1930, page 168; https://archive.org/stream/luckybag1930unse#page/168/mode/1up: GEORGE MICHAEL HOLLEY, “G. M.” “Holy”; San Francisco, California; George, being an Army Junior, had vague ideas of going to West Point. Upon graduation from high school in San Francisco, however, his mind was abruptly changed. Having seen the photoplay, The Midshipman, his interest in the Navy was aroused and he decided that life at sea was much more romantic than chasing Army mules. Hence George decided to cast his lot with the Navy. To those who know “Holy” well, he appears in his true form. With an unassuming attitude and an air of determination, he has won a place in our hearts. In his seriousness, however, there is a dash of humor that demonstrates George’s ability to enjoy the pleasures of life. He is not a consistent “Snake” and stoutly asserts that women in general have no charm for him. He exhibits, however, some weakness for the fairer sex. George is one of the exponents of “Comme il faut,” being a strict observer of regulations. He states that his greatest achievement was staying in the Academy for four years. But to us, it never seemed as if the necessary effort bothered him. “Now, Mister, what is the moral of that little lesson?” “Plebes is plebes, sir.”
