Yarrall, Frederick Clifford (1881-1971)

Frederick Clifford Yarrall was a jeweller. He lived at 1836 Alberni Street from 1910 to 1953.

Frederick Clifford Yarrall was born in Nelson, New Zealand, on June 7, 1881. His father was Henry Yarrall (1847-1920), who had a greengrocer business in Blenheim, New Zealand, until about 1875, along with John Gibson Yarrall.

Frederick’s mother was Hannah Maria Wratt (1856-1927), who was the daughter of George and Sarah Wratt.

In 1907, Frederick came to Vancouver, along with his brother, George Wilford Yarrall. (George did not stay in Canada. He moved to teach engraving at the Bradley Polytechnic Institute in Peoria, Illinois. Later George lived in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he manufactured jewellery. George died in Kentucky on June 21, 1941.)

By 1908, Frederick was a jeweller in Vancouver, working with The Goldsmiths Limited at 533 Dunsmuir Street. He was living at 569 Hornby Street.

On March 11, 1909, in Vancouver, Frederick married Eleanor Nesbit. She was born on July 28, 1870, in Spittal, Northumberland, England. Her father was John Nesbit (1819-1877), who was a blacksmith. Eleanor’s mother was Margaret Trotter (about 1826-1901). (Eleanor was a sister of George Nesbit (1857-1940), who lived at 1860 Alberni Street from 1912 to 1925.)

By 1910, Frederick and Eleanor had moved to 1836 Alberni Street. Frederick was a jeweller with Oscar Bruce Allan (1878-1966), a well-known Vancouver optician and jeweller who was originally from Guelph, Ontario.

It appears that Frederick and Eleanor did not have any children.

Mr Yarrall had been associated with Freemasonry for more than half a century, and had attained high honour in the Craft. He was also particularly active in. the Druidic Order, being one of the founders of the Napier Lodge of which he was secretary for 21 years, much of his service in that office having been performed voluntarily. Acknowledgment of his value in that connection has been made by the Napier Druids directing the Whangarei Lodge to obtain a wreath. It is notable that six of .his seven sons followed their father’s example by joining the ranks of Druidism. Mr Yarrall arrived with his parents in New Zealand from England 65 years ago, their first location being Nelson. The deceased’s birthplace was London. Since leaving Napier seven years ago Mr Yarrall had resided variously at Titoki and elsewhere. Besides his wife there are living six sons —Messrs L. H. Yarrall (Rongatira), A. M. Yarrall (Waitoa, Thames), F. C. Yarrall (Vancouver), G. W. Yarrall (Kentucky, U.S.A.), F. G. Yarrall (Titoki), and W. J. Yarrall (Sydney)—also one daughter, Mrs W. E. Lindsay (Auckland). The youngest son, Mr H. S. Yarrall, lost his life in the Messines battle. The deceased gentleman was most highly regarded by all who knew him for his sterling merit and conspicuous kindness. The funeral will leave the hospital at 1.15 p.m. to-morrow for the Maunu cemetery.”
