Green, Frank Stanley (1864-1953)

Frank Stanley Green was an employee of the Vancouver Hardware Company, the secretary-treasurer of the Imperial Lumber Company Limited, and a real estate broker. He lived at 1816 Georgia Street from 1900 to 1902.

Frank Stanley Green was born on October 4, 1864, in Waterford, Ontario. His father was Nelson Green (1836-1902), an inventor who worked in the family manufacturing business in Waterford. Nelson was also Waterford’s first reeve (equivalent to the position of mayor) from 1878 to 1884. Frank’s mother was Mabel Isabel Kellam (1839-1911).

The Green Family’s Manufacturing Business

Nelson Green’s father, James Lodor Green (1810-1888) and James’s brother, John Green (1802-1852), started a foundry business in Waterford in the 1840s.

One of the products of the foundry was the “Royce Royal Reaper.” John Sears Royce (1819-1883) was an American inventor who had patented several designs for harvesters and reapers in the United States and Canada.

Green Brothers and Company was one of the firms that acquired the rights to make the “Royce Reaper” in Canada. Green Brothers sold 25 of the reapers in 1875; they sold another 300 in 1876.

Nelson Green also patented at least two of his own inventions. In 1887, he received a United States patent for metal shingles.

“Be it known that l, Nelson Green, of the village of Waterford, in the county of Norfolk, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, manufacturer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Shingles, of which the following is a specification.” N. Green. Metal Shingle, No. 364,507. Patented June 7, 1887; http://www.google.ca/patents/US364507.

Also in 1887, Nelson Green and Joshua Young received a United States patent for a “machine for cutting string beans.”

“Be it known that we, Joshua Young and Nelson Green, both manufacturers, and both of the village of Waterford, in the county of Norfolk, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting String or Green Beans, of which the following is a specification.” J. Frank Stanley Green

In 1871 and 1881, Frank Stanley Green was living with his parents in Waterford.

By 1891, it appears that Frank was living in his own house in Waterford; he was working as a hardware merchant. He was married to Lillian Mary Lundy, who was born in Ontario on January 8, 1868. Her father was Edward Holden Lundy (1836-1916). Her mother was Marcie Emily Mudge (1839-1914).

Frank first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1900. He was an employee of the Vancouver Hardware Company at 339 Hastings Street. Alfred Oliver Campbell (1863-1944) was the president of the company.

The list of names showed Frank’s home address at 1876 Georgia Street, but in the street listing he was at 1816 Georgia Street.

It appears that the 1816 address is correct. According to the 1903 version of the Vancouver fire insurance map, there was no 1876 Georgia Street, although there were houses at 1814 and 1820 Georgia. Perhaps 1816 was at the rear of 1814 Georgia.

In 1902, Frank was the secretary-treasurer of the Imperial Lumber Company Limited. Alexander McKay was the manager of the company, which had a location on Beach Avenue. There was also a saw mill at Gibson’s Landing.

Frank did not appear in the Vancouver directories from 1903 to 1907. By 1908, he was working as a real estate broker. In 1909, he was a broker with F.J. Hart and Company Limited.

By 1911, Frank had started his own short-lived real estate company with James A. McLean.

During and after the First World War, Frank worked at a series of jobs, usually related to lumbering and hardware or ranching and gardening.

The 1913 Vancouver directory described Frank as a rancher.
In 1914, he was a clerk with the Smith Shannon Lumber Company.
By 1917, he was the sales manager with the B.C. Iowa Lumber Company.
In 1918, he was an employee of McLennan & McFeely Company, a hardware and building supply company.
By 1921, he was again a rancher, living at Burnaby Lake.
In the mid-1920s, he was a gardener, living at 3107 Douglas Street in Burnaby.

Lillian died in Vancouver on June 10, 1924. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Frank died in White Rock, British Columbia. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Frank and Lillian had a son.

Maxwell Lundy Green

Maxwell Lundy Green was born in Vancouver in May 1909. In the late 1920s he worked as an electrician.

On August 15, 1931, in Burnaby, British Columbia, Maxwell married Irene Ethel Beard. She was born on August 3, 1906, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her father was Frederick James Beard (1884-1950). Her mother was Lilian Tolhurst (1884-1969).

Maxwell was an active ham radio operator.

Maxwell died in 2000.

Irene died in White Rock, British Columbia, on October 12, 2002.

In the 1840’s and 50’s James L Green was somewhat of an industrial magnate in Waterford. With the help of his two sons Wesley and Nelson, he built the first foundry in the district. At the outset their products were mainly stoves and plows, but as the age of new ideas, new products and of new invention crept in they commenced the manufacture of other farm implements. Mr. Green built the famous Royal Royce Reapers, a marvelous invention of the time. . . . James Green and his sons were devoted Methodists. They donated ground for the Methodist Church and parsonage and helped build both the present parsonage and the former one as well as the church itself. Nelson Green long led the choir there.”
