After a successful decade in the 1920s, William’s business suffered in the early 1930s. He became despondent and on February 5, 1932, he died at Second Beach in Stanley Park, after shooting himself in the head.

He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Adah continued to live at 1872 Barclay Street until the early 1940s. She died in Vancouver on September 30, 1951. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

William and Adah had the following children.

Monica Catherine Clare Mason-Rooke

Monica Catherine Clare Mason-Rooke was born on August 22, 1903, at Eaglescliffe, near Stockton-on-Tees in North East England.

In 1924, Janet Smith, who was a nursemaid, died in mysterious circumstances in the house of Richard Baker in Shaughnessy Heights. (Richard Baker was the son of Frederick Francis Baker, who lived at 1991 Nelson Street from 1913 to 1925.) The exact reason for Janet Smith’s death remained largely a mystery. There was no criminal conviction and the case is officially unsolved.

The night before Janet Smith’s death, Richard Baker’s brother, Frederick, had held a party in Richard’s house. Monica Mason-Rooke later suggested that Frederick’s party was connected with Janet Smith’s death. Frederick sued Monica for alleged slander.

The Baker family and the Mason-Rooke family worked out a solution: Monica apologized, and Frederick Baker withdrew the lawsuit.

On August 27, 1931, in Vancouver, Monica married William Melland Booth, who was an electrical engineer. He was born in Manchester, England on July 28, 1881. His parents were William Henry Booth and Jennie Olive Roberts.

After the wedding Monica and William went to live in England for a time.

They later returned to live in West Vancouver, British Columbia.

William died in West Vancouver on July 31, 1963.

Monica later married Alan Winfred Drane, who was an engineer and accountant. He was born in London, England, on August 30, 1891. His father was Benjamin Drane.

Alan died in North Vancouver on February 22, 1985.

Monica died in North Vancouver on September 14, 1994.

The University of British Columbia offers a Monica Mason-Rooke Memorial Scholarship in Music.

Sussex Andrew Mason-Rooke

Sussex Andrew Mason-Rooke was born on November 30, 1908, in Yokohama, Japan. (He was usually called “Andrew.”)
