Devaney, John (“Jack”) Henry (1881-1954)

John Henry Devaney was a physical instructor at the Vancouver Athletic Club, which was at the northwest corner of Dunsmuir Street and Beatty Street. He lived at 1841 Morton Avenue in 1916.

 

Family Background

John Henry Devaney (sometimes called “Jack”) was born on February 14, 1881.

Some sources say that he was born in Manchester, England; others say that he was born in Ireland.

His parents were Michael and Mary Devaney.

 

Marriage to Mary Hayes

On November 6, 1907, in Warwick, England, Jack married Mary Ethel Hayes. She was born on January 7, 1888 (possibly in England, although some sources say Africa).

 

To Canada

Jack and Mary arrived in Canada about 1908.

In 1909, Jack was a bartender in Guelph, Ontario.

 

To Vancouver

By the time of the 1911 Canada census, Jack and Mary were in Vancouver. Jack was working as a dray driver.

It appears that he was also a packer at Frederick Buscombe’s china and glassware firm from 1910 to 1912.

Jack first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1915. He was a physical instructor with the Vancouver Athletic Club.

First World War

In 1916, John was living at 1841 Morton Avenue when he enlisted to service with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

He went overseas to England, although he did not serve in France.

For a time he was struck off strength as a deserter. He later surrendered and he was sentenced to a period of detention.

 

Return to British Columbia

After John was discharged from the army on April 26, 1919,  the Devaneys lived at 2633 Prince Edward Street in Vancouver.

By 1921, Jack was operating a farm in Chilliwack, British Columbia.

In 1923, he opened a recreational boating facility at Chilliwack Lake.

From 1925 to 1936, he was again an athletics instructor in Vancouver, sometimes with the Vancouver Parks recreation system.

Later Life

In 1937, Jack and Mary were living on Texada Island in British Columbia.

In 1938, Jack was operating a steam bath in the Lyric Theatre Building at 751 Granville Street.

In 1938 and 1939, Jack was the secretary of the B.C. Society of Physiotherapy and Massage Practitioners.

Jack and Mary continued to live in the lower mainland area of British Columbia through the 1940s and early 1950s.

Jack died on February 11, 1954, in New Westminster, British Columbia. He was buried in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in New Westminster.

Mary died in Surrey, British Columbia, on February 21, 1976. She was buried in Valley View Cemetery in Surrey.

Joseph John Devaney

Joseph John Devaney (sometimes called “John”) was born in Guelph, Ontario, on August 17, 1909.

In 1934, John was a fisherman on Lasqueti Island in British Columbia.

On March 1, 1934, in Vancouver, John married Adele May Davis. She was born about 1912 at Crows Nest, British Columbia. Her parents were Michael Davis and Nell Wallace.

In 1947, John and Adele were living at 2910 Carolina Street in Vancouver. John was an operator with Western Plywoods. Their three-year-old daughter, Gertrude, and another girl, were injured when they fell from a wooden fire escape at the back of their home.

It appears that John later lived in Nanaimo, British Columbia, and that he died about 2003.

 

William Henry Devaney

William Henry Devaney was born in Vancouver on July 4, 1911.

He worked as a physiotherapist.

He was married to Annie Louise Carter.

William died in Powell River, British Columbia on April 19, 1986.

 

Mary Devaney

Mary Devaney was born in Vancouver on January 25, 1913. She died in Vancouver on April 6, 1913.

Mary Devaney was born in British Columbia on March 28, 1914.

She never married.

She died in Vancouver on January 26, 1937, and she was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Eileen Devaney

Eileen Devaney was born in Vancouver about 1916.

In 1921, she was living with her parents in Chilliwack, British Columbia.

 

Margaret Kathleen Devaney

Margaret Kathleen Devaney was born in Chilliwack, British Columbia in 1921.

In 1938, in Vancouver, she married James Barclay Parsons. He was born in England about 1912. His father was Ernest Parsons. This marriage ended in divorce in Victoria on October 17, 1949.

Margaret later married Alfred Taylor, who died in 1967.

Margaret lived in Plumweseep, New Brunswick. She died on March 28, 2008.

 

Marie Celina Devaney

Marie Celina Devaney was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, on November 21, 1925.

By 1954, she was married to Ronald Christianson Silvey; they were living in Bowser, British Columbia.

Marie died in Comox, British Columbia, on October 20, 1984.
