Kyle, Morison (1866-1949)

Morison Kyle was the manager of the Vancouver Stock Exchange and the provincial manager for the Home Life Assurance Company of Canada. He also acted as a broker.

He was also a theatre manager and an author of plays.

In later life he was a prospector.

He lived at 952 Denman Street from 1903 to 1904.

He was at 1739 Comox Street from 1907 to 1909.

Family Background

Morison Kyle was born in Scotland, probably on April 16, 1866. His parents were Morison and Jane Ann Kyle.

He arrived in Canada about 1880.

Marriage to Jessie Stuart

On May 20, 1885, in Aylmer, Ontario, Morison married Jessie Bell Stuart. She was born in Ontario on October 12, 1871. Her parents were Charles Stuart and Mary Smith.

Inventor

Morison was a part-time inventor. In 1889, he invented Kyle’s Leaf Turner, which was a device for turning pages of sheet music. He received a patent for the device in 1890.

In 1891, he was a manager of a general store in Rat Portage, Ontario.

To Western Canada

The Kyle family  lived in Vancouver from about 1902 to 1905.

By 1906, they were in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

By 1911, they were in Calgary, Alberta, where Morison was operating a theatre.

Morison’s plays included A Bolt from the Blue; A Fight for Time; A friend of the Enemy; A Daughter of France; For the Honour of the Service (all dated 1919).

In 1928, he published a three act play called Padlocked.

In 1934, he published Ta-ra-ra Ditties; Facts and Fancies, New and Old.

Using the pseudonym Muir Kelvynn, he also wrote Hell’s Bells and Maid to Order (both dated 1940).

Morison died in Winnipeg on September 1, 1949. He was buried in Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg.

Jessie died in Vancouver on November 13, 1935.

Morison Kyle and Jessie Bell Stuart had the following children.

William Charles Kyle

William Charles Kyle was born in Middleton, Ontario on March 18, 1886. (This may be the same person as Charles Morison Kyle, below.)

Charles Morison Kyle

Charles (“Charley”) Morison Kyle was born in Guysborough, Ontario on March 18, 1886. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

On July 12, 1918, he married Gertrude Isabine Olts. She was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick, on November 19, 1896. Her parents were George William Olts and Bertha Gertrude Macdonald.

Charles died in Vancouver on December 30, 1941.

Gertrude died in Vancouver on September 25, 1956.

Louis Alexander Kyle

Louis Alexander Kyle (sometimes called Lewis) was born on October 23, 1889, in Rat Portage, Ontario.

He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

He never married.

He died in Terrace, British Columbia, on July 3, 1977.

Roy Stuart Kyle

Roy (Royal) Stuart Kyle was born in Kenora, Ontario on May 13, 1891.

He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

He never married.

He died in Vancouver on July 29, 1944.

James Arthur Gladston Kyle

James Arthur Gladston Kyle was born in Rainy River, Ontario on November 24, 1892.

He married Mary Wilson.

He died in Vancouver on September 5, 1974.

Stuart Robertson Kyle

Stuart Robertson Kyle was born on August 12, 1896, in Ontario.

He married Flora Nevin Mckissock.

He died in Vancouver on June 1, 1961.

Flora died in Vancouver on February 20, 1986.
