To Hopkins Landing

By 1915, William and Gertrude were living at Hopkins Landing, near Gibsons, British Columbia. William was working as a logger.

 

Military Service

In October 1915, William enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War. He served overseas with the Canadian Pioneers for three years.

 

Return to British Columbia

After the war, William returned to Hopkins Landing. He was a dairy farmer in Hopkins Landing until 1942.

Later Life

In 1940, William and Gertrude celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

By 1945, William and Gertrude were retired and living at 4550 Belmont Avenue in Vancouver.

William died in Vancouver on October 7, 1948. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Gertrude continued to live at 4550 Belmont Avenue until the mid-1950s. She died in Vancouver on November 17, 1955. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

It appears that William and Gertrude did not have any children of their own. However, they adopted a son, who was called James Waite Orde.

 

James Waite Orde

James Waite Orde was born James Waite in Vancouver on November 16, 1916.

By 1921, he was living with William and Gertrude in Hopkins Landing.

James did not marry.

He died in New Westminster on May 25, 1942. He was buried in the Hospital Cemetery in New Westminster.

Mr. Orde was the son of the late Rev. Jocelyn Shafto Orde of Northumberland, Eng. One year after his arrival here he made his home at Hopkins Landing, where he lived until 1942.

After three years of overseas service with the First Canadian Pioneers he devoted his time to dairy farming.

Surviving is his wife, the former Gertrude Maude Stephenson of Cork, Ireland, who now lives at 4550 Belmont. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at Hopkins Landing in 1939.
