John went to France at the beginning of the Second World War. While serving as an observer on a British reconnaissance bomber over Germany, he was seriously wounded. He continued to navigate the bomber and he helped the pilot to land safely in French territory.

While John was in hospital for his wounds, he received the Medaile Militaire from the French government. He died on October 5, 1939, and he was buried in Choloy War Cemetery in Meurthe-et-Moselle, France.
