Heritage Vancouver: Building Permits

There are two references to this property in Heritage Vancouver Society’s database of historic building permits: http://permits.heritagevancouver.org/index.php?cID=1 [searched January 22, 2020].

The first permit refers to “B.B. Stevens” as the owner, although Daniel Benjamin Stevens was associated with the property in other sources.

The architect on the permit was “G.W. Grant,” who was probably George William Grant (1852-1925). This project does not appear on the list of his projects in the Biographical Dictionary of Architects in Canada: 1800-1950: http://dictionaryofarchitectsincanada.org/node/1596.

The builder was “H. Wilson,” who appears to be Hugh Wilson, a contractor who was living at 39 Seventh Avenue in 1902.

The second building permit showed the owner as D.B. Stevens. This appears to be related to a 1916 permit for 1853 Alberni Street, which involved the move of a residence onto that property, which was on the southern half of the same lot. Perhaps the builders moved the house from 1844 Georgia Street to 1853 Alberni Street.

The architects and builders were listed as “Fisher & Hislip.” The members of the firm of Fisher & Hislop were Herbert Harry Fisher (1881-1939) and John William Hislop (1877-1957).
