John Hawkes (1851-1931) was a journalist, historian, and the first legislative librarian for the Province of Saskatchewan. His three volume work called “The Story of Saskatchewan and Its People” appeared in 1924.

John Hawkes’s wife was born Elizabeth Ellen Parsons in Reading, England on February 16, 1852 (or 1851). In addition to raising a large family, she edited and published the Broadview Express, which was based in Broadview, about 25 kilometres west of Whitewood. She was the first woman newspaper editor and publisher in Saskatchewan.

John died in Aylesford, England, in 1931.

Elizabeth died in Saskatchewan on October 25, 1944. She was buried in Maple Creek Cemetery in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.

 

John Aylesford Hawkes

John lived with his parents in England in the 1870s and early 1880s. About 1885 he travelled with his parents to Saskatchewan.

By 1901, John was married to Edith Biggins. She was born in England July 25, 1873. In 1901, John and Edith were living in Whitewood in the Northwest Territories (later Saskatchewan). John was a general merchant.

John first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1905. He was living at 337 East Seventh Avenue, and he was a manager at Woodward’s Department Store.

John later married Ellen Mary French.

John died in Vancouver on November 6, 1951. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Ellen lived at 5037 Quebec Street in Vancouver until 1953. Further information for her is not available. (In 1954, Miss Kate French was at 5037 Quebec Street. Kate died in Vancouver on December 26, 1954. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver. In 1955, 5037 Quebec Street was vacant.)

Minnie Fay Hawkes

Minnie Fay Hawkes was born on August 20, 1898, in Whitewood, Northwest Territories (later Saskatchewan).

In 1918 she was a stenographer with the Imperial Tobacco Company.

On December 29, 1919, in Vancouver, Minnie married Ward Elmer Catching, an auto salesman who was living in North Bend, Washington State. He was born on November 13, 1894, in Riddle, Oregon. His parents were Clarence Elmer Catching and Sylva Ruth Jones.

Ward had enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force near the end of the First World War. He was demobilized on March 8, 1919.

In 1920, Ward and Minnie were living with Ward’s parents in Snoqualmie, east of Seattle, Washington.

In 1930 and 1940, Ward and Minnie were living in King County, Washington.

In 1942, Ward registered with the United States military draft system.

Minnie died in 1968. She was buried in Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue, Washington.

Ward died in North Bend, King County, Washington, in September 1971. He was buried in Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue.

 

John Aylesford Hawkes

John (“Johny”) Aylesford Hawkes was born on October 14, 1898 (or 1899) in Whitewood (or Regina), Northwest Territories.

He worked as a messenger.

He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and was killed in action on October 21, 1917, during the preparations for the battle at Passchendaele. He was buried at Ypres, Belgium.

Harry Vincent Hawkes

Harry Vincent Hawkes was born on March 27, 1901, in Whitewood, Northwest Territories.

He worked as a salesman.

On March 26, 1927, he married Winifred Laurel Fox, who was a stenographer. She was born on February 22, 1903, in Aberdeen, Scotland. Her parents were George Shilliam Fox (1873-1949) and Christina McPherson (1868-1923).

Harry later worked as a motorman for the B.C. Electric Railway.

Harry died in Vancouver on May 13, 1955.

Winifred died in Vancouver on February 7, 1980.

 

Alfred Malcolm Hawkes

Alfred Malcolm Hawkes was born in British Columbia (probably in Vancouver) on August 10, 1908.

He died of diphtheria in Vancouver on November 24, 1918. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Arthur Ralph Hawkes

Arthur Ralph Hawkes was born in Vancouver on April 5, 1911.

He worked as a barber.

On November 22, 1937, in Vancouver, he married Thelma Vivian Clark, who was a telephone operator. She was born in Vancouver on November 10, 1914. Her parents were Roy Earl Clark and Neta Jane Maguire.

Thelma died in Surrey, British Columbia, on September 18, 1990.

Arthur died in White Rock, British Columbia, on March 6, 1995.

 

Nellie Norah Hawkes

Nellie Norah Hawkes was born in Vancouver on March 9, 1914. She died in Vancouver on November 17, 1918. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
