Rufus Halsey Roys was a lumber dealer. He lived at 1997 Beach Avenue in 1911 and at 1875 Robson Street in 1912.

 

Family Background

Rufus Halsey Roys was born on December 28, 1849, in Madison, Wisconsin. His father was Samuel Halsey Roys (1821-1857), who was a lawyer and politician.

Rufus’s mother was Sarah Emerson (1825-1913). In 1865 (eight years after Samuel Roys’s death in 1857), in Madison, Wisconson, Sarah married William A. Lawrence, who was a businessman in Janesville, Wisconsin.

Sarah died in Janesville, Wisconsin, on January 18, 1913. She had been living at the home of her daughter, Nancy, who was married to Malcolm George Jeffris (1862-1933) a lawyer and capitalist. The Jeffris family lived at 502 St. Lawrence Avenue in Janesville.

Rufus’s Married Life

On November 26, 1874, Rufus married Kate Augusta Loveland. She was born on January 26, 1850, in Westport, New York. Her father was Ralph Andrus Loveland (1819-1899), who was involved in several businesses, including water transportation, lumbering and wool-growing; he was also a New York state assemblyman and senator.

At the time of the 1910 United States census, Rufus and Kate were still living in Saginaw.

 

The Howard Cole Timber Investment Company

Rufus Roys first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1909. He was living at 800 Burrard Street. He was a timber lands broker with the Howard Cole Timber Investment Company, which had offices at number 14 of the Hadden Building, at 633 Hastings Street.

The Howard Cole Timber Investment Company Limited was incorporated in 1907.

Howard Grant Cole was born in West Virginia about 1870. After spending some time in Louisiana, he became a land speculator and promoter who was involved in projects throughout North America.

Howard Cole was also notorious because of the complexities of his marital life.

Three decades later, Howard Cole was involved in another marital dispute, this time over timber licenses in British Columbia. All levels of court agreed that Howard was the owner of the timber licences.

In January 1945, Howard obtained a Washington State marriage licence to marry Elsie Joyce Porter (née Slusing).

In 1947, Howard was staying at the Hotel Vancouver. He died there on June 10, 1947.

Ralph Loveland Roys was born in Greenville, Michigan, on February 14, 1879.

He studied at the University of Michigan, and graduated in 1900 with a degree in medieval French.

He was also adept at other languages, including German, Spanish, Russian and Polish.

He moved to Vancouver with his family about 1911, where he worked in his father’s timber business.

During the First World War, he joined the United States military and diplomatic school at Ann Arbor, Michigan, specializing in Russian.

After the war, he returned to the family timber business in Vancouver.

During the less-busy times of the timber business, Ralph often travelled to Central America, and he became an expert on Maya culture and history.

On February 6, 1924, in Los Angeles, California, he married Alice Malvina Popper, who was a teacher. She was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia (some sources say “Austria”) on February 24, 1891. Her parents were Sigmund Popper and Malwine Krans.

Ralph and Alice lived in Vancouver until about 1940.

Later Ralph and Alice went to Seattle, where Ralph continued his work on the Maya.

Ralph died in Seattle on December 12, 1965.

Alice died in Monterey, California on August 19, 1990.

Ralph Loveland Roys, Junior was born in Vancouver on June 16, 1925.

He died on November 22, 2006, in Washington State.

 

Katie Claire Roys

Katie Claire Roys was born in Los Angeles, California on February 10, 1928.

She studied at Bush School in Seattle, Washington, at the New England Conservatory, and in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. She became an accomplished musician, specializing at first in piano. Later she became interested in the fortepiano and the harpsichord.

While she was working for the Boston Symphony, she met Rosario Mazzeo (1911-1997), a well-known clarinet player who spent 33 years with the Boston Symphony. They were married in Seattle on August 19, 1955.

Along with music, Rosario was also interested in ornithology and photography. He and Katie were friends with Ansel Adams and Edward Weston.

In 1966, they moved to California.

Rosario died in Carmel, California on July 19, 1997. Katie continued to teach and to perform in the Monterey Bay area of California.

 

Lawrence Roys

Lawrence Roys was an archeologist and a founder of Western Structural Steel Corporation in Moline, Illinois.

Lawrence Roys was born in Saginaw, Michigan on October 10, 1884.

In 1906, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of Michigan.

On January 11, 1912, in Janesville, Wisconsin, Lawrence married Louise Crosby. She was born in Janesville on May 13, 1876. Her parents were Chester Sweet Crosby (1845 – 1880) and Mary Williams (1844 – 1908).

Lawrence developed an interest in Maya mathematics and engineering. One of his publications dealt with methods to find equivalences between the Maya calendar and the Christian calendar.

Allyn Goodrich Roys

Allyn Goodrich Roys was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on July 12, 1889. He studied forestry at the University of Washington.

During the First World War, he was a member of the United States Calvary. He also worked as a seaman and officer on merchant ships and passenger ships.

About 1930, Allyn moved to Pasadena, California.

On November 27, 1930, in Los Angeles, California, he married Edna M. Blumve. She was born in California on March 12, 1882. Her father was John Augustus Blumve.
