John Haines Amiss – Henderson’s Greater Vancouver City Directory – 1918 – page 355

John Haines Amiss was the Vancouver superintendent for the Bradstreet Company. He lived at 1901 Pendrell Street in 1917 and at 1836 Comox Street from 1918 to 1920.

He was born in England about 1854.

He married Mary Mullins Earl. She was born on September 3, 1853, in England. Her father was Emmanuel Earl.

He was married to Mary Mullins Earl. She was born on September 3, 1853, probably in Newcastle under Lyme in Staffordshire, England. Her father was Emmanuel Earl, who was born about 1825 in Maidford, Northampton, England. Her mother, also called Mary, was born about 1825, in Lyme Regis, Dorsetshire, England.

In 1910, John and Mary were living in Portland, Oregon; John worked for the Bradstreet Company (a company that gathered and distributed credit-related information on business. It merged merged with R.G. Dun and Company in 1933 to become Dun and Bradstreet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dun_&_Bradstreet.)

After John and Mary arrived in Vancouver about 1912, John became the local manager for the Bradstreet Company, a position that he held until 1927.

Mary died in Vancouver on September 19, 1928.

John died in Vancouver on January 23, 1930.

There is no information to suggest that John and Mary had any children.

“Mr. John Amiss Dies,” Vancouver Sun, January 24, 1930, page 24: “Mr. John H. Amiss passed away at 6:15 Thursday morning at Vancouver General hospital. He was 75 years old and had been a sufferer from asthma for several years and had been confined to his bed for the past nine months. He was connected with the Bradstreet Company for many years and was manager of their Vancouver branch from 1912 until 1927, when he retired on account of failing health. He had been formerly associated with the company in Portland, Oregon, and San Francisco. Mr. Amiss was a widower, his wife having predeceased him in September, 1928. He was born in England. The funeral will take place from the Edwards new chapel, Saturday at 2:30 p.m.”

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from the chapel of the T. Edwards Undertaking Co.”
